Special Regulations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy: Notice

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Board of Graduate Studies, they have approved an amendment to the Special Regulations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 494) as set out below. The purpose of the amendment is to require candidates to include in their applications an introductory summary. The regulations have been amended as follows:

Regulation 5.

By amending the second sentence so as to read:

A candidate shall send with the application a fee of £385 for the Chest, and two copies of each of the works specified; a candidate shall also submit an introductory summary in the form of a statement of between 1,000 and 5,000 words summarizing the rationale behind the works submitted, the extent to which the works represent a consistent body of research, and the original contribution to knowledge they make.

Regulation 7.

By replacing in line 3 the words 'any statement submitted by the candidate in support of the application' by the words 'the candidate's introductory summary'.
