Research Assistant in the Faculty of Classics (computer-assisted text reading project)

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant post in the Faculty of Classics to take up appointment from 1 October 2002, or as soon as possible thereafter. The post-holder will contribute to the work of the Faculty's computer-assisted text reading project. The main responsibilities of the post will be (a) to write commentaries tagged electronically on texts (initially Latin) selected for treatment at a level and with a content (primarily linguistic) appropriate to beginning or near beginning language learners, and (b) to trial these with students and in consultation with other team and Faculty members. Candidates should have a good degree in Classics, with particular strength in Greek and Latin language, and some research and teaching experience. The person appointed should be competent and confident in using the Web and standard software packages (ICT positive), and should be the sort of person who would take to XML if not already familiar with it. A proven interest in programming and/or Web design may be an advantage. Good personal skills are essential. The post-holder will report to the Director of the Project, Dr R. J. E. Thompson.

The post will be for three years. The salary is in the range of £17,626 to £19,681 a year and is pensionable.

Departmental Administrator in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine

The Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine is seeking to appoint a senior administrator as soon as possible. The main responsibilities of this senior role are to manage the administrative functions of this large and complex Department, with delegated authority from the Head of Department for the management of the Department's resources. The person appointed will advise and support the Head of Department, the Chairman of the Faculty Board, the Chairman of the Appointments Committee for the Faculty, and other academic staff on administrative and financial matters. In addition, the post-holder will act as Secretary of the Faculty Board, and Secretary to various departmental committees.

The Administrator will supervise the two departmental Assistant Secretaries and carry out many of the day-to-day administrative tasks. The candidate will, therefore, need to develop detailed knowledge of all aspects of the Department's activities, which include the Clinical Veterinary Course; the Queen's Veterinary Hospital; the Centre for Veterinary Science and other research elements; the Graduate School of Biological, Medical, and Veterinary Sciences; and the Midsummer Veterinary Surgery.

Candidates should be educated to degree level. They must possess good communication and management skills, and be flexible and well organized. Previous relevant experience in a senior administrative post is essential, preferably in a higher education establishment with a research grant portfolio. The salary range for this post is £24,435 to £36,355 a year.

Research Assistant/Research Associate (Full time) in the Department of Land Economy (Centre for Housing and Planning Research)

The Centre for Housing and Planning Research is a leading research group working in the broad field of housing and planning, based within the 5 rated Department of Land Economy. Current research themes include: household and housing projections at national, regional, and local level; the planning system and land supply for housing; affordable housing for key workers; the regulation and allocation of social housing; and research into rents, incomes, benefits, and financial inclusion. The Centre also runs the Dataspring housing markets database which provides the basis for analysis of housing and the local economy at the local authority level.

The post-holder should possess analytical and research skills in the fields of economics, social policy, or geography; database development and interrogation; and survey and secondary data analysis.

Appointment within the salary range of £17,626 to £19,681 (Research Assistant) or £17,626 to £26,491 (Research Associate) will be based on qualifications and experience and will be for a period of twelve months in the first instance (part-time and job share applications are welcome).
