UNIVERSITY OFFICE

Applications are invited for the following University office:

University Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine (Veterinary Public Health)

A University Lectureship in Veterinary Public Health is available at the Veterinary School. This is a newly established post in this exciting and topical field. The appointee will work closely with a strong and established group of over thirty scientists investigating the biology underlying infectious diseases of animals, especially those diseases important for public health.

The major initial task of the new Lecturer will be to take responsibility for the organization and expansion of the teaching programme in veterinary public health under the guidance of the Marks and Spencer Professor of Farm Animal Health, Food Science, and Food Safety.

The teaching of veterinary public health and food hygiene in the UK veterinary schools is integrated throughout the whole curriculum from first to final year. The new Lecturer will take responsibility for the public health teaching programme at Cambridge. This will include the provision of theoretical and practical teaching in food hygiene and veterinary public health courses as well as taking the lead in overseeing and advising on those aspects of veterinary public health taught in other courses. The new Lecturer will be expected to oversee and monitor undergraduate extra-mural experience in veterinary public health and food hygiene.

It is expected that some teaching will be delivered in collaboration with other veterinary schools as well as in collaboration with food retailers and producers such as Marks and Spencer Plc. This teaching programme will be delivered according to the guidelines drawn up by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2002 and approved by the EAEVE.

In addition to this key role in the departmental teaching strategy, the new Lecturer will have the opportunity to develop a strong research group in infectious diseases in collaboration with, and under the guidance of, the Marks and Spencer Professor. This is an exciting and expanding research field generating great public interest that provides an excellent opportunity to perform cutting-edge research with good funding. The successful applicant should have experience of the food industry in the UK or Europe.

Appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. Salary is on the scale of £22,522 to £34,734 a year.
