Geographical Tripos, Part II, 2003: Notice by the Examiners

The Examiners for Part II of the Geographical Tripos give notice that, for the examination to be held in 2003, the papers to be offered will be examined as shown in the table below. The following terms are defined:

(i) 'Three hour examination': The paper will be examined by a conventional unseen three-hour examination in which candidates will be asked to attempt three questions from a choice of not less than nine questions. With the exception of Paper 15, the papers will be undivided.
(ii) 'Two + 1 examination': The assessment of such papers will consist of a conventional three-hour examination in which candidates will be asked to attempt two questions from a choice of not less than six questions. The paper will be undivided. In addition, there will be assessed course-work to be submitted not later than the division of the Easter Term in the year of the examination. The nature of the course-work required will be determined by the University Teaching Officer responsible for the co-ordination of the course who will provide, at the first lecture of the course, written details of the procedures which will be followed. The course-work will be equivalent to one question in quantity and for assessment in determining an overall mark for the paper.
Paper 1. Human geography I: Cultural geography. Three-hour examination.
Paper 2. Human geography II: The cultures of the field: historical issues. Three-hour examination.
Paper 3. Prescribed topic or topics in geography I: Geographical information:
application in the study of disease and crime.
Three-hour examination.
Paper 4. Prescribed topic or topics in geography II: Melanesia. Two + 1 examination.
Paper 5. Prescribed area or areas I: The geography of Africa. Three-hour examination.
Paper 6. Prescribed area or areas II: The human geography of Latin America. Three-hour examination.
Paper 7. Historical geography I: Aspects of historical cultural analysis,
with special reference to Western Europe after 1700.
Two + 1 examination.
Paper 8. Historical geography II: European historical demography. Two + 1 examination.
Paper 9. Prescribed topic or topics in geography III:
The social engagement with nature.
Three-hour examination.
Paper 10. Prescribed topic or topics in geography IV: Biogeography: the ecology
of change.
Three-hour examination.
Paper 11. Prescribed topic or topics in environmental geography: Environment,
policy, and society.
Three-hour examination.
Paper 12. Physical geography I: The geography of the ocean world. Three-hour examination.
Paper 13. Physical geography II: Glacial environments. Three-hour examination.
Paper 14. Prescribed topic or topics in geography V: Volcanology. Three-hour examination.
Paper 15. Prescribed topic or topics in geography VI: Quaternary environments. Three-hour examination.
