University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for an initial period of three or five years, with reappointment thereafter subject to satisfactory performance. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £22,522 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,734.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £19,681 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,435.

Two University Lectureships in the Department of Chemical Engineering

The Department of Chemical Engineering invites applications for two University Lectureships. The appointments fall within the broad area of modern chemical engineering involving activity at the interface between science and engineering. Applications will be considered from graduates in chemical engineering, or associated branches of engineering or science, for example, biology, chemistry, materials science, mathematics, microbiology, or physics.

One appointment is specifically involved in setting up a new collaboration in advanced chemical engineering practice with MIT under the CMI programme.

The successful candidates will have, or will be expected to develop, a record of world-class research commensurate with the Department's international standing and research reputation. Teaching responsibilities will include contributing to all aspects of undergraduate courses and supervising graduate students.

Two University Lecturers in the Faculty of Education

The Faculty of Education aims to strengthen Cambridge's national and international reputation as a leading centre for study and research in education and as a significant contributor to improving educational practice in partnership with schools, colleges, and other educational agencies. The successful candidates will be active educational researchers and will contribute to teaching within the Faculty's highly regarded programmes of initial teacher education, continuing professional development, and advanced study and research. The Faculty is seeking to make two appointments from 1 September 2002 to enhance its existing strengths in the following areas: inclusive education and special educational needs; primary education; research methods in education.

Applications are invited from those able to offer a specialism that contributes to one or more of these fields. Candidates should be able to demonstrate successful experience in both teacher development and improving educational practice, and the ability to apply this experience in innovative research and evaluation projects. The post-holders will take a major responsibility for continuing professional development and higher degree work in their respective fields, and may also be expected to contribute to other aspects of Faculty teaching such as the undergraduate and P.G.C.E. courses.

Posts in the Department of Engineering

University Lecturer in Industrial Systems

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a University Lectureship in Industrial Systems. Based in the Institute for Manufacturing within the Manufacturing and Management Division of the Department, the post will involve leading research in the design and organization of industrial systems coupled with tutorship of the Advanced Course in Design, Manufacture, and Management (ACDMM). The ACDMM is an established and highly respected postgraduate programme which involves close engagement with a wide range of companies nationally and internationally. The post provides a unique opportunity to pursue research in close collaboration with industry and the involvement of high-quality graduate students. The successful candidate will have a strong academic education, significant industrial experience, and a demonstrated capability for original research.

Senior Design Engineer

The Department seeks to appoint a Senior Design Engineer to take up appointment as soon as possible. The person appointed will be responsible for innovative design projects which support the research and teaching programmes in the Department, including experimental equipment design. Applicants should have broad and up-to-date experience of engineering design, ideally including mechatronic system design and the use of modern CAD tools. They are likely to be Chartered Engineers. The work involves regular contact with staff and students, and may include a small amount of lecturing and demonstrating.

The pensionable scale of stipends for this post is £24,435 rising by ten annual increments to £35,249. Initial appointment is for five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. University Lecturer in the Department of Physics

A University Lecturer in the Department of Physics is required to take up appointment from 1 October 2002, or as soon as possible thereafter, in the area of experimental astrophysics. Candidates are sought with experience in any area of experimental astrophysics. The Astrophysics Group carries out a wide range of research programmes, with particular emphasis on the fields of optical/infrared interferometry, the cosmic microwave background radiation, star formation and galaxy evolution, and submillimetre-wave detector physics and instrumentation. Activities in these areas embrace the frontier between observation and theory and the development of novel technologies for astronomical instrumentation. For observational work a wide range of facilities worldwide are used in addition to those constructed in the Astrophysics Group.

The successful applicant would be expected to have had experience in the design, development, and construction of astrophysical experiments, and instrumentation in any of the above or other astrophysical areas. The appointee would also be expected to contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching needs of the Department of Physics.

Administrative Officer, Grade II, in the Research Services Division (Divisional Administrator)

Applications are invited for the position of Administrative Officer, Grade II (Divisional Administrator), within the Research Services Division to take up appointment from 1 August 2002. The post-holder, who will report to the Director of the Research Services Division, will be responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of systems and procedures that facilitate effective management of all personnel and resources in the Division. He/she will have direct managerial responsibility for all secretarial/office support staff and delegated responsibility, on behalf of the Director, for overseeing the overall day-to-day administration of the Division.

The successful candidate will have well-developed communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, and previous experience in a senior administrative post. Proven ability in managing resources and staff must be demonstrated. A degree or equivalent experience is required.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade II, is £20,470 rising by six annual increments to £26,491. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance.

Lecturer in Public Health Ethics in the Centre for Medical Genetics and Policy and the Department of History and Philosophy of Science

The Centre for Medical Genetics and Policy and the Department of History and Philosophy of Science intend to appoint a philosopher who will focus on topics in biomedical ethics that reflect advances in our knowledge of genetics. In addition to teaching and research within the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, the post-holder will devote 40% of his or her time to policy analysis and educational programmes for the Cambridge Genetics Knowledge Park.

The post will be for three years in the first instance with the possibility of reappointment for one additional year. It is hoped that the successful applicant will take up appointment on 1 October 2002. The pensionable scale of stipends for this post is £22,522 to £34,734 a year depending on experience.

Research Associate in the Department of Land Economy

Applications are invited for a Research Associate post (up to 15 months) in the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies, Department of Land Economy. The starting date will be as soon as possible.

The project for which the post is required is to investigate why new and growing enterprises, particularly those with a technology edge, thrive in certain places and not in others. The research team comprises scholars from the Department of Land Economy and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) School of Architecture and Planning. The project will require an extensive body of fieldwork both in the United Kingdom and the United States and will investigate the contribution of universities/research centres, businesses, and regional development policies to the development of enterprising places.

Candidates for this post should have a good degree in a relevant subject and some research experience, whether as an employed researcher or from a Ph.D. Degree and postdoctoral work. Experience of data analysis, interviewing, and report writing would be an advantage. The salary is in the range of £17,626 to £26,491 a year.
