University Centre User Group: Notice

On 22 November 2000, the Report of the Council on the management of the University Centre was published (Reporter, 2000-01, p. 214). In this Report the Council recommended that a Centre User Group be established:

'The Council have considered the Syndicate's recommendation that an internal user group should be established to advise the General Manager on members' needs and concerns. Whilst they do not want to formalize the establishment of this group in the regulations, they have, however, agreed to invite the General Manager through the Registrary to make proposals for the membership of such a group under the Chairmanship of a senior member of the Council. The Council would not expect routinely to receive reports from the user group, but they believe that there may be occasions when it would be helpful to the General Manager, the Registrary, and the Council for the Chairman of the Group to be able to speak directly to the Council about the Centre's activities.'

The Council have since agreed the following composition of the User Group:

(a) a senior member of the Council as Chair

(b) the General Manager of the Centre as Secretary

(c) two members of the Regent House nominated by the Council

(d) two Assistant Staff members nominated by the University and Assistants Joint Board

(e) two unestablished research staff members nominated by postdoctorate students of Cambridge

(f) two retired members from the USS or CPS pension schemes

(g) two graduate student members nominated by the Graduate Union

(h) one Gates Scholar elected from amongst the Gates Scholars

Members in classes (c) - (f) to serve for four years at a time, those in (g) and (h) for one year.

The following have already been appointed members of the Group in the class indicated:

(a) James Matheson, Chairman

(b) Tom Walston, Secretary

(c) Richard Stibbs and Harry Percival

(d) Hai-San Leong and Paul Stokes

(e) Jeanette Dyer and Yasushi Saka

(f) Violet Cane [and vacancy]

(g) Raj Joshi and Roz Almond

(h) Andy Robertson

It is envisaged that the User Group will meet once each term, beginning in the Lent Term 2002. The membership of the User Group, contact details, agendas, and minutes will be listed on the Group's website at http://www.unicen.cam.ac.uk/UserGroup/.

Users of the Centre are encouraged to contact the Group, for example by e-mail to user-group@unicen.cam.ac.uk, to comment.
