Applications are invited for the post of Director of the Careers Service and Secretary to the Careers Service Syndicate which will be vacant from 1 October 2002 on the retirement of Mr Tony Raban.

Senior Computer Officer (Operations Support Manager) in the Management Information Services Division of the University Offices

A vacancy exists for a Senior Computer Officer in the Management Information Services Division of the University Offices, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The Division supports a number of applications on behalf of the Unified Administrative Service, including Human Resources, Finance, and Student Records, which are all based on Oracle databases with a mixture of bespoke developments and bought-in systems. Residual VMS based systems currently running Oracle 7.3 are in the process of being migrated to a common Sun Solaris/Oracle 8i platform.

The post-holder will be responsible for the efficient operation of the application hardware and software infrastructure, management of the operations support staff, and for the computer room environments. Duties will involve liaison with third party suppliers, liaison with development and functional staff, and responsibility for the efficiency of job scheduling, security, and reporting provisions. Candidates should be educated to degree level and have operational and management experience in a large distributed environment.

Initial appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. Appointment will be at the Senior Computer Officer Grade for which the pensionable stipend is £39,986 a year.

Computer Officer, Grade III, in the Faculties of Philosophy and Modern and Medieval Languages

The Faculties of Philosophy and Modern and Medieval Languages seek to appoint a Computer Officer, Grade III, to support the provision of the computing service in all sections including the graduate centres and libraries. The post-holder will provide help and advice to all academic, administrative, library and research staff, and students. He or she will direct and supervise a full-time Computing Technician for the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages, and will also provide full technical support to the Faculty of Philosophy.

The successful candidate will have a good working knowledge of Macintosh and Microsoft operating systems in a networked environment and some knowledge of UNIX operating systems. He or she will also have several years' relevant working experience, preferably in an academic environment, will be self-motivated, will possess excellent communication and organizational skills, and will be prepared to become involved in developing and guiding the Faculties' IT policies.

The appointment will be for up to five years in the first instance with the possibility of reappointment for further periods not exceeding five years at a time. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade III, is currently £20,470 a year, rising by six annual increments to £26,491.
