University Computing Service: Notice

UNDERGRADUATE TEACHING SYSTEM (THOR)

This notice is addressed to all those who currently use, or may be interested in using, the UNIX-based Undergraduate Teaching System (Thor) to support their teaching, either for organized courses or for undergraduate project work.

During the current academical year much of the course work for which Thor was used in previous years has been transferred to new distributed systems provided by the University Computing Service, which are based on the dual-boot Personal Workstation Facility (PWF) and Managed Cluster Service (MSC) Linux machines. In the light of this, the University Computing Service is seeking to determine whether there is sufficient demand for the Thor service for it to continue after this academical year. In the absence of definitely expressed demand it is proposed that the service will be withdrawn.

Requests to use the Thor service in the academical year 2002-03 are needed by Monday, 13 May 2002. These should be submitted either by e-mail (J.M.Wilkins@ucs.cam.ac.uk) or in writing to Dr J. M. Wilkins, University Computing Service, New Museums Site, and should include details of the applications software required. Initial enquiries about possible use of the PWF Linux service for teaching should be directed to unix-support@ucs.cam.ac.uk.
