St John's College

HARPER-WOOD STUDENTSHIP FOR ENGLISH POETRY AND LITERATURE

St John's College invites applications for the Harper-Wood Studentship for English Poetry and Literature. The purpose of the Studentship is to encourage creative writing by making it possible for the holder to travel and study. During the period of tenure, the student will be expected to produce original literary work while engaging in a course of study or research (not necessarily attached to a university or other institution). All or part of the period of tenure must be spent in a foreign country of the student's choice.

The Studentship is tenable for one year and is not renewable. It is a condition of election that at the time of the election the candidate be a graduate of any University of Great Britain, Ireland, the Commonwealth, or the United States of America, and be not over thirty years of age. The student will normally be expected to enter upon the Studentship on 1 October 2002.

The emoluments of the Studentship will be determined by the College Council in light of the student's qualifications and financial circumstances (including emoluments from other sources), up to a maximum of £7,500. Financial assistance may also be given to enable the student to spend all or part of the period of study abroad.

Letters of application should be sent to the Master, St John's College, Cambridge, CB2 1TP, to reach him not later than 31 May 2002, and should be accompanied by the candidate's curriculum vitae or resumé, a plan of the proposed study or research and of the proposed travel, and the names and addresses of not more than two referees. Short-listed candidates may be invited to submit examples of their work, up to a limit of 5,000 words. Details of any other research plans or applications which might relate to the tenure of the Harper-Wood Studentship should also be supplied.

NADEN STUDENTSHIP FOR RESEARCH IN DIVINITY

The Council of St John's College invite applications for a Studentship in Divinity in the University of Cambridge. A candidate may be of either sex. The student will be expected to carry out research on a topic approved by the College Council whilst residing within the University or at another place approved by the Council. It is not a condition of election that the candidate shall have been admitted to a degree in Divinity or Theology, nor that the student shall work for a higher degree in Cambridge.

A Student will normally be elected for one year only. In special cases the tenure may be extended. The student shall enter upon the Studentship on a date not earlier than 1 October 2002 and not later than 1 January 2003, to be approved by the Council.

The emolument of the Studentship shall be such annual sum, not exceeding £16,624 a year, as the Council shall determine, having regard to the qualifications, seniority, and other circumstances of the candidate, including any emoluments from other sources. The Council may additionally permit teaching in Cambridge to an amount not exceeding six hours a week. The successful candidate will be assisted to find accommodation in Cambridge and will be granted some dining privileges at the Fellows' Table. The Student will make such reports on the scope and progress of the research as the Council shall require.

Applications must be sent to the Master, St John's College, Cambridge, CB2 1TP, to reach him not later than 29 March 2002, and should state: the applicant's full name, date, and place of birth; degrees or other academic qualifications with dates, other awards and distinctions; the nature of any research previously undertaken, any published works, and any appointments held; the nature of the research to be pursued, if elected; any other emoluments held or applied for, or for which it is intended to apply; the approximate date on which the Studentship will be taken up, and any circumstances the Council should take into consideration in determining the period of tenure; the names and addresses of not more than two persons to whom the Council may refer. Testimonials should not be sent.
