Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for an initial period of three or five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £22,299 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,390. As of 1 March 2002, the pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer will be £22,522, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,734.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is currently £19,486 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,193. As of 1 March 2002, the pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer will be £19,681, rising by six annual increments to £24,435.

Senior Assistant Registrary in the Academic Division of the University Offices (Head of Examinations)

The person appointed will have management responsibility for a team supporting the overall administration of University examinations, and act as Secretary of the relevant committees. This is a senior post requiring relevant administrative experience in Higher Education. Candidates should be educated to degree level and have experience of liaising with, and giving authoritative guidance to, committees, working groups, staff, and senior officers. The candidate will be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to produce briefings and reports, and to display a high level of initiative.

The salary will be £39,986 (discretionary point at £42,242). Initial appointment will be for three years, renewable subject to satisfactory performance until the retiring age.

University Lecturers in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy (two posts)

One of these positions will be in the field of mechanical properties of metals and materials. The second post will be in the field of materials science and applications are invited from candidates with experience in any area of the discipline. Both post-holders will be expected to make a contribution to the teaching activities of the Department across a wide range of materials topics. Both appointments will be made for three years in the first instance with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Classics (Latin Literature)

Applications for this post in the field of Classical Latin Literature (to start by 1 October 2002) are invited from suitably qualified candidates. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Faculty's teaching programme in Latin literature and language, and to engage in research in the field of Latin literature. Applications from scholars in the early stages of their career are particularly encouraged. Assistant Registraries in the Personnel Division of the University Offices (Personnel Consultants)

Suitably qualified persons are sought to undertake general duties as Personnel Consultants, at the level of Assistant Registrary, in relation to the institutions within the University, and to undertake specific projects. Candidates should have previous experience in an Human Resources environment, preferably in the Higher Education sector.

Appointment will be to an academic-related post, at the level of Assistant Registrary. The salary scale for the post is £22,299 rising by eleven annual increments to £34,390 a year (£22,522 to £34,734 from March 2002).

Administrative Officers, Grade I, of the University Offices in the Finance Division (Functional Investigators)

The Cambridge University Financial System is based on Oracle Financials. The system is managed by the Financial Systems Operations Group (FSOG).

The University is seeking to appoint two Functional Investigators, Grade AOI, who will be members of the FSOG, and will be responsible for investigating the University's use of the system and improvements in processes and work flows, developing specifications for changes agreed through the change processes, and identifying solutions to user problems not resolved by the Helpdesk.

The post-holders will work closely with other members of the group, with all functions in the Finance Division, and with administrators in Departments across the University. The post-holders will develop a detailed knowledge of all modules within the system and will have an input in the training of users, and in the software upgrade process.

Applicants should have strong experience of Oracle Financials, or a similar system, preferably within a public sector environment, together with excellent oral and written communication skills, and should have at least one year's experience in a similar role. Applicants should possess either a part or full accountancy qualification, or have strong financial experience. A basic knowledge of SQL and Unix is desirable.

The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade I, is currently £24,193 a year rising by five annual increments to £29,414 (£24,435 to £29,709 as of March 2002). Temporary Lectureship in the Faculty of Philosophy

Applications are invited for a temporary teaching post in the Faculty of Philosophy arising from the election of Dr Alex Oliver to a Leverhulme Trust Major Fellowship. Candidates are not restricted to any particular area of specialization in their research, but must be prepared to teach in at least one of the following areas: philosophical logic; mathematical logic; ethics; philosophy of mind. The successful candidate will be required to give forty lectures each academic year; to supervise graduate students, and to examine at both undergraduate and graduate level. The appointment will be tenable from 1 October 2002, for a fixed term of two years. The salary is limited to spinal point 8 (currently £20,465) on the RA1A scale.
