University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for an initial period of three or five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £22,299 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,390. As of 1 March 2002, the pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer will be £22,522, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,734.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is currently £19,486 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,193. As of 1 March 2002, the pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer will be £19,681, rising by six annual increments to £24,435.

University Lecturer in the Institute of Astronomy

Applications are invited for a post in astronomy or astrophysics at the Institute of Astronomy. The vacancy is available from 1 April 2002 or thereabouts at the level of University Lecturer. Candidates are sought with experience in any area of theory or observation. The Institute's current activities include work in cosmology and large-scale structure of the Universe, the formation, structure, and evolution of galaxies, quasars, high-energy astrophysics, stellar dynamics, N-body simulations, star formation and evolution, accretion discs, helio and asteroseismology, gravitational lensing, numerical hydrodynamics, measurement of stellar radial velocities, and instrumentation for large optical and IR telescopes. The UK is a partner in the Gemini observatory and a member of ESO. The successful applicant would be expected to contribute to these or other research programmes and interact with other members of the Institute as well as astronomers in other related Departments in Cambridge. The appointee would also be expected to contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching needs of the Institute.

University Lecturer in the Faculty of Oriental Studies

The Faculty of Oriental Studies wishes to appoint a University Lecturer in Chinese Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to teach classical and literary Chinese at undergraduate level, and to contribute to graduate teaching and supervision (M.Phil. and Ph.D.). Particular attention will be paid to applicants with a research interest and publications in pre-dynastic or early imperial China. Some previous teaching experience would be an advantage. Candidates should have obtained, or should be about to obtain, a Ph.D. in a relevant subject.

University Lecturer/University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics

The Department of Linguistics invites applications for the post of University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Morphology and Phonology to take up appointment on 1 July 2002 or as soon as possible thereafter. As well as teaching Morphology and Phonology, the ability to teach in other areas of Linguistics is desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to show outstanding achievement and potential in research and publication in the field.

Librarian in the Faculty of Classics

Applications are invited for the post of Librarian (Grade B) in the Faculty of Classics. The Librarian is responsible for all reader services, book selection and collection development, administration and forward planning, the appointment of library assistant staff, and the management of the Library's budget.

Candidates should have a good honours degree and a postgraduate qualification in Librarianship and Information Studies, together with experience of academic librarianship. A background in Classics, though not essential, is highly desirable. The successful candidate will also be expected to have substantial experience of, and be able to advise the Faculty on, the development of electronic information services.

The appointment is for three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Grade B Librarian is currently £19,486 a year, rising by seven annual increments to £26,229. Graduate Officer in Research

The Committee of Management of the Centre of South Asian Studies invite applications for the post of Graduate Officer in Research. The Graduate Officer will be expected to undertake an appointed programme of research and to assist the Director of the Centre in its work and may undertake a limited amount of teaching. The person appointed will be expected either to have obtained a Ph.D. (or equivalent) Degree within the last five years, or to be on the point of submitting a doctoral dissertation by the time the appointment takes place. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit a substantial piece of written work as part of their application. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Graduate Officer is currently £17,626 rising by two annual increments to £19,681.

Administrative Officer, Grade I, in the University Offices: Personnel Division (Information Officer)

The principal role of the Information Officer will be to manage the University's personnel system. This will include developing processes, procedures, and methods that support the accurate and timely input of data and its translation into management information to a wide range of internal and external clients.

Candidates must have high standards of numeracy and of attention to detail, be capable of logical analysis and creative problem-solving, be well-organized, and able to work to tight deadlines in a calm and efficient manner.

Previous relevant experience in the management or administration of personnel systems (or similar) is essential and experience of integration of personnel and payroll data would be an advantage.

Prospective candidates for appointment to this office should normally be educated to degree level although substantial relevant experience may compensate for a formal qualification. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade I, is currently £24,193 rising by five annual increments to £29,414.

Posts in the University Offices: Finance Division

Manager, Management Accounting

The Manager will be responsible for a team of five staff, which includes both Finance Advisers and Accountancy Assistants. The team provides financial advice to a range of areas across the University including three academic Schools and academic services. Applicants should be qualified (CCAB or by experience) accountants. Previous managerial experience would be an advantage. The salary will be in the range of £22,299 to £34,390 a year with excellent holidays and pension scheme.

Finance Adviser, Management Accounting

The Finance Adviser will be responsible for providing financial advice and support to specific academic areas. Ideally applicants will be working towards a recognized professional accounting qualification, or have at least three years' experience. The salary will be in the range of £20,267 to £29,414 a year with excellent holidays and pension scheme.

Research Associate (Secure Hardware Design) in the Computer Laboratory

An electrical engineer (or computer scientist with strong digital electronic skills) is required for a postdoctoral or postgraduate research associate position for nine months with the possibility of renewal.

This position is in conjunction with a EU-funded project to develop next-generation smart card processors. This is part of two continuing investigations into the security of tamper-resistant devices, and self-timed logic. The project will investigate potential tampering-techniques on security microcontrollers and will design more resilient prototype processors using self-timed logic and special countermeasures. The work will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Manchester, the Université Catholique de Louvain, and several industrial partners.

Candidates should have at least a 2:1 Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering. Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in a suitable subject. Experience of self-timed circuits, low-power design, and use of commercial VLSI CAD tools would be of particular benefit. An interest in security will be an obvious advantage.

The salary will be in the range of £17,451 to £26,229 a year, depending on age and qualifications.
