Graces submitted to the Regent House on 12 December 2001

The Council submit the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, other than any which is withdrawn or for which a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 113), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 21 December 2001.

1. That Dr D. C. Nicholls, F, be appointed a member of the Finance Committee of the Council to serve for three years from 1 January 2002.

2. That Lord Mackay of Clashfern, Honorary Fellow of Trinity College and Girton College, be appointed Chairman of the Septemviri to serve for two years from 1 January 2002.1

3. That Professor Dame Marilyn Strathern, Mistress of Girton College, be appointed one of the Septemviri to serve for two years from 1 January 2002.

4. That Professor W. A. Brown, Master of Darwin College, be appointed one of the Septemviri to serve for two years from 1 January 2002.

5. That Professor J. H. Baker, of St Catharine's College, be appointed one of the Septemviri to serve for two years from 1 January 2002.1

6. That, on the recommendation of the Board of Graduate Studies, the regulations for the review of the results of examinations for postgraduate qualifications be amended as follows:2

Regulation 1.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

1. The following regulations shall apply to any University examination listed in the Schedule to these regulations, and shall be limited to those cases where the candidate has failed to be approved for the qualification for which he or she was examined.

By attaching the following Schedule to the regulations.

7. That, on the recommendation of the General Board, the Professorship of Public Health be retitled the Professorship of Epidemiology and Medicine.3

8. That the regulations for the William Harvey Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 767) be amended as follows:4

Regulation 2.

By amending the first sentence so as to read:

The Managers of the Fund shall be the Regius Professor of Physic, the Clinical Dean, and two persons appointed by the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine in the Michaelmas Term to serve for a period of four years from 1 January following the appointment.

9. That the recommendations in paragraph 9 of the Joint Report of the Council and the General Board, dated 23 July 2002 and 11 July 2001, on amendments to regulations relating to deductions from and additional payments to the stipends of University officers (Reporter, 2000-01, p. 1003) be approved.5

10. That the recommendations in paragraph 9 of the Joint Report of the Council and the General Board, dated 23 July 2001 and 11 July 2001, on continuing education and lifelong learning, and the Cambridge Programme for Industry (Reporter, 2000-01, p. 1004) be approved.6

11. That the recommendations in paragraph 6 of the Joint Report of the Council and the General Board, dated 23 July 2002 and 11 July 2001, on the relaxation of the restrictions on the holding of certain College offices and on the amount of College teaching that may be undertaken by Professors and Readers and academic-related officers (Reporter, 2000-01, p. 1010) as amended in the Council's Notice of 10 December 2001 be approved.7

12. That the recommendation in paragraph 13 of the Joint Report of the Council and the General Board, dated 12 November 2001 and 30 October 2001, on the implementation in Cambridge of the 2001 pay increase for non-clinical academic and academic-related staff (Reporter, p. 233) be approved.

13. That the recommendations in paragraph 12 of the Report of the General Board, dated 30 October 2001, on the establishment of a Directorship of the Cambridge Endowment for Research in Finance (CERF) (Reporter, p. 240) be approved.

14. That the recommendations in paragraph 5 of the Report of the General Board, dated 30 October 2001, on the establishment of a Merck Company Foundation Professorship of Experimental Neurology (Reporter, p. 241) be approved.

15. That the recommendations in paragraph 4 of the Report of the General Board, dated 30 October 2001, on the title of the Professorship of History and Philosophy of Science (Reporter, p. 242) be approved.

16. That the recommendations in paragraph 18 of the Report of the Faculty Board of Economics and Politics, dated 8 October 2001, on amendments to the regulations for the Economics Tripos (Reporter, p. 243) be approved.

2 Statutes and Ordinances, p. 415. A review of the regulations for the review of the results of examinations for postgraduate qualifications is currently in progress. The Board of Graduate Studies have proposed that it would be appropriate, as a first step, for the regulations to be amended so as to clarify that they apply only to cases of failure to be approved for the qualification for which the candidate was examined. The Board have also proposed that a Schedule of the postgraduate examinations to be covered by these regulations be included.
