Report of the General Board on the establishment of two Professorships of Education

The GENERAL BOARD beg leave to report to the University as follows:

1. In their Report, dated 20 November 2000 (Reporter, 2000-01, p. 216) the Council and the General Board recommended inter alia that approval be given to convergence between the University School of Education and Homerton College in relation to teaching and research in Education, and to the transfer of the College's teaching and research activities to the University. The recommendations of the Report were approved by Grace 7 of 13 December 2001, and the transfer took place on 1 August 2001.

2. In the Report the Council and Board stated that they would establish the appropriate number of University Lectureships and other academic offices for the transfer of staff concerned from the College to the employment of the University. The Board subsequently agreed, in view of the seniority of the holders of the Directorships of Research at Homerton College, Professor J. M. Gray, FBA, and Professor J. Rudduck, to consider recommending the establishment of single-tenure Professorships for those individuals. The Board appointed an Advisory Committee, as follows to consider the matter further:

Dr G. Johnson (in the Chair, as the Vice-Chancellor's Deputy), Professor D. McIntyre (School of Education), Professor S. Brown (University of Stirling), Professor M. L. Brown (King's College London), Professor J. MacBeath (School of Education), Professor A. Pollard (School of Education), Professor R. A. Pring (Oxford), Professor M. Schofield (Faculty of Classics), Professor Dame Marilyn Strathern (Department of Social Anthropology).

The Board subsequently approved this Committee's recommendations that two single-tenure Professorships of Education should be established, one for Professor Gray and one for Professor Rudduck.

3. The Board have ascertained that Professor Gray and Professor Rudduck are willing to accept appointment to the Professorships if established. The Board accordingly propose that Professorships be established for one tenure, as specified, for the persons named.

4. The General Board recommend:

I. That a Professorship of Education be established in the University for Professor J. M. Gray from 1 January 2002, placed in Schedule B of the Statutes, and assigned to the Department of Education.

II. That a Professorship of Education be established in the University for Professor J. Rudduck from 1 January 2002, placed in Schedule B of the Statutes, and assigned to the Department of Education.
