Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, 2002

The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2002, the form of the examinations for certain papers for the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos will be changed as follows:

Part Ia

Paper GL 7. Homer

Paper GL 8. Virgil

Candidates for each paper will be required to answer Section A, Section B, and one question from Section C.

Parts Ia AND Ib

Paper Gr. 1. Greek literature, thought, and history, since 1880

Candidates will be required to answer three questions. At least one question must be answered from each section.

Paper Gr. 2. Introduction to the Cretan Renaissance

Candidates will be required to answer three questions. At least one question must be answered from each section.

Parts Ib AND II

Paper Ge 7. German literature, thought, and history, from 1700 to 1815

Paper Ge 9. German literature, thought, and history, from 1815 to 1914

Paper Ge 10. German literature, thought, and history, since 1910

Candidates must answer at least one question from Section B. If they choose to answer two questions from Section B, they may answer both one question on Thought and one question on History, or they may answer two questions on Thought or two questions on History. The questions in Section B will be arranged in four groups, two groups of questions on Thought, and two groups of questions on History. Candidates can only offer one question from any one group.

Paper Ru. 5. Russian literature, history, and culture, from 1676 to 1801

Candidates will be required to answer three questions. Candidates will be required to answer one question from each section.

Paper Ru. 10. The history of the Russian language (also serves as Paper 14 of the Linguistics Tripos)

Candidates will be required to answer three questions. Part II candidates will be required to answer Question 1 and two other questions.

Paper Ru. 11. A special period or subject in Russian literature, thought, or history. Dostoevskii

Candidates will be required to answer three questions. Part II candidates will be required to answer two questions from Section A and one question from Section B.

Paper CS 3. The Slavonic languages (also serves as Paper 17 of the Linguistics Tripos)

Candidates will be required to answer three questions. Part II candidates will be required to answer Question 1 and two other questions.

Part II

Paper Li. 7. Historical linguistics (Paper 7 of the Linguistics Tripos)

Paper Li. 8. The structure of English (Paper 8 of the Linguistics Tripos and Paper 28 of Part II of the English Tripos)

Paper Sp. 6. Spanish literature, life, and history, before 1492

The paper will consist of three sections (set texts, cultural topics, and historical topics), and candidates will be required to attempt a total of three questions to be chosen from at least two of the sections.
