University Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry

Applications are invited for the post of University Lecturer in Biochemistry to be held in the Department of Biochemistry. The post is available from 1 January 2002. The duties of the post will include contributions to undergraduate teaching, preferably either in molecular aspects of microbial biochemistry or in bioenergetics. Candidates with other research and teaching interests will be considered. The successful candidate will also be expected to initiate an independent programme of research in biochemistry.

Appointment will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is currently £22,299 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,390.

Computer Officer, Grade III, in the Department of Engineering (Computing Infrastructure Support)

Computer Officer, Grade III, to take up appointment in the Department of Engineering. The new Computer Officer will work with existing Computer Officers who have responsibility for electronic mail, computer security, and the Department's administrative databases. The person appointed will become responsible for the day-to-day running of the electronic mail system and for routine security scanning, including providing some end-user support in these areas. He or she will also be expected to provide assistance to administrative staff, including development of database forms and reports, and data collection and manipulation.

Candidates should have experience in one or more of the following areas, and a willingness to learn about the others: Unix or Windows systems administration, e-mail administration, PERL programming, Microsoft Office, and SQL.

The initial appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade III, is £20,267 to £26,229 a year.

Finance Manager in the School of the Physical Sciences

Applications are invited for the newly created post of Financial Manager in the School of the Physical Sciences to take up appointment on 1 March 2002, or as soon as possible thereafter. The School consists of eight large Departments and a number of multidisciplinary research units responsible for teaching and research in the physical sciences. The annual expenditure of the School is £60m of which £30m derives from research grants.

The postholder, who will be responsible to the Secretary of the School, will provide financial advice, management information, and assistance to the Departments of the School so as to enhance and co-ordinate their budgeting and accounting activities within the context of the University's Financial System and improve their understanding and use of the Oracle Financials System.

The successful candidate will preferably be a qualified accountant with at least four years' relevant experience, will have a good understanding of business processes and financial systems, and will possess good interpersonal skills, both written and oral, allied to tact and diplomacy. Experience of the Oracle Financials Accounting package would be an advantage.

The appointment will be at the level of Assistant Treasurer for which the pensionable scale of stipends is £22,299 a year rising by eleven annual increments to £34,390. Appointment will be for three years in the first instance. Reappointment will depend upon the permanent establishment of the post at the end of the initial period.

Senior Research Associate in the Faculty of Education

A Senior Research Associate is required to devise and implement a research programme into the admission and academic performance of graduate students in the University of Cambridge. The person appointed will be based in the Faculty of Education and will work under the supervision of the University's Joint Committee on Academic Performance who will monitor the research.

Candidates should be of postdoctoral status and have research experience which is relevant to this project e.g. in Education, Psychology, or Sociology. The person appointed will need to be experienced in educational research methodology and capable of analysing and interpreting statistics and qualitative data. The researcher will need to be pro-active and able to work on his or her own.

The appointment will be for a period of eighteen months beginning as early as may be arranged in 2002. The salary will be on the Senior Research Associate scale in the range of £22,299 to £32,215 a year. Computer Associate, Grade II, in the Department of Engineering (Research Computing Support)

The main role of this post is to provide system administration and computing support for several of the Department's research groups. The systems range from desktop PCs to multiprocessor servers. Most run Unix but there is also a growing use of Windows NT and 2000.

Applications range from in-house programs to state-of-the-art commercial packages. This diversity provides an interesting workload and there is the opportunity for the right candidate to develop new systems administration techniques and tools in this rapidly developing area.

Candidates should have substantial experience of Unix and/or Windows systems administration in a networked environment. This is a fixed-term two-year appointment. The salary scale for a Computer Associate, Grade II, is £25,203 a year to £29,414.

Technology Transfer Associate or Senior Technology Transfer Associate in the Research Services Division

We are looking for enthusiastic and flexible self-starters to join our expanding team focused on protecting and commercializing the University's research results. The successful candidates will work alongside experienced professionals in our busy Technology Transfer Office which, through its work, aims to benefit society, the University, and its researchers.

As an Associate, you will be directly supporting the Executives who help University staff to identify, evaluate, and protect intellectual property and promote its commercial use. You will also be helping to provide Departments with information on the Division's services.

For either position you should have a good first degree in a scientific discipline (preferably in the general area of engineering/physical sciences/IT) and some experience in a commercial or research environment, together with an interest in managing intellectual property. Any knowledge of the patenting process, licensing, or other aspects of technology transfer would be an advantage and, for the more senior role, are essential.

You will also need to be well-organized, computer-literate, and an excellent communicator, with a real desire to learn and to become involved in a wide range of tasks.

The salary scale is up to £26,229 a year (Associate) or £29,414 (Senior Associate), including a pension and other benefits.
