Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities: Notice

Initial theme, October 2001 to September 2003: The organization of knowledge

Over the next two years the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities (CRASSH) will concentrate on a major theme: The organization of knowledge. While CRASSH will continue during this period to support a wide range of research projects and activities that have no connection with this theme, it wishes in particular to encourage work that relates in some way to it. Conferences, seminars, and workshops on various aspects of the theme are currently being planned. The Centre's Visiting Fellowship programme (due to come into operation in the academical year 2002-03) will be linked exclusively to this theme. A fuller description of the theme is given on the CRASSH website at http://www.crassh.cam.ac.uk/theme.html/.

Those wishing to propose possible activities relevant to this theme are encouraged to contact the Director as soon as possible. There will be an open meeting to discuss the theme on Monday, 26 November 2001 at 1 p.m. in the Little Hall.

Future themes

At its next meeting on 30 April 2002, CRASSH's Policy Committee will be considering possible themes for future adoption by the Centre, and hoping in particular to determine the theme for adoption from October 2003.

Those wishing to suggest possible future themes to the Committee are urged to contact the Director, Professor Ian Donaldson, as soon as possible, at the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities, Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics Building, Silver Street, Cambridge, CB3 9EW (tel. 01223 765275, e-mail id202@cam.ac.uk).

RESEARCH GRANTS WORKSHOP FOR THE ARTS, HUMANITIES, AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

There will be a half-day workshop about preparing grant applications from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, 29 November, in Room 7 of the Mill Lane Lecture Rooms. Speakers will include representatives from around the University with a proven track record of success in applying for grants in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and with first-hand experience of the selection procedures of the major funding bodies, as well as representatives of the University's Research Services Division and Staff Development Office. The full programme will shortly be available on the CRASSH website at http://www.crassh.cam.ac.uk/.

Those wishing to attend should contact Virginia Pearce, Administrator, Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities (tel. 01223 766886, e-mail vp206@cam.ac.uk).
