Philosophical Society

On Monday, 19 November 2001, at 8.30 p.m. in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, New Museums Site, Dr R. H. S. Carpenter, of the Department of Physiology, will deliver a lecture, entitled Choice or chance - how the brain makes decisions. All who are interested are invited.

At a meeting held on 5 November 2001 in the Cockcroft Lecture Theatre, Professor A. Howie, President, was in the Chair. Seventy-five Fellows were elected. During 2001 a total of 198 Fellows have been elected and nine have been re-elected. Sir John Meurig Thomas, FRS, Master of Peterhouse, delivered a lecture entitled Michael Faraday. A vote of thanks was moved by Professor L. M. Brown.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting of the Society was held on Monday, 29 October 2001, in the Arts School, Bene't Street at 4.30 p.m.

Dr David Husain was in the Chair

1. The Treasurer presented the audited accounts for the period January to December 2000, which were adopted.
2. The following Officers and Members of Council were elected for the year 2002:

President: Professor T. M. Cox

Treasurer: Dr A. V. Edwards

Vice-Presidents: Professor K. Glover, Dr A. J. Munro, Professor T. J. Pedley

Secretaries: Dr C. L-H. Huang (Biological), Professor A. M. Campbell (Physical), Dr J. M. E. Hyland (Mathematical)

Ordinary Members of Council who continue: Dr B. T. Grenfell, Sir Sam Edwards, Professor M. F. Ashby, Professor A. W. Cuthbert, Dr A. G. Smith

New Ordinary Members of Council 2002: Dr D. B. Norman, Professor J. D. Mollon, Dr D. E. Bowyer, Dr C. Y. Barlow, Dr D. J. C. MacKay, Dr M. Zernika-Goetz, Dr Z. Barber

3. Twenty-eight Fellows were elected. It was reported that since the last Annual General Meeting nine Fellows had died and one hundred and forty-five had resigned.
4. Messrs Peters Elworthy and Moore were appointed to act as Auditors for the year 2000.

ONE-DAY MEETING

A one-day meeting on Interference will be held in the Pippard Lecture Theatre, Cavendish Laboratory, on Monday, 3 December 2001, starting at 9.30 a.m. This will be an interdisciplinary meeting open to all members of the University. The Speakers are Professor John Mollon, Professor Shon Ffowcs Williams, Dr Richard Henderson, Professor Brian Moore, Dr Chris Haniff, Dr Gareth Roberts, Professor Sir Michael Berry, Professor Hannes Lichte, Professor Keith Burnett, and Professor Anton Zeilinger.

Applications should be made in writing to the Executive Secretary, Cambridge Philosophical Society, Bene't Street, Cambridge, CB2 3PY, for a full programme. The first 120 Fellows of the Society to apply will be offered a free lunch.

After the meeting there will be an exhibition and dinner at Emmanuel College in honour of the Thomas Young Bicentenary. The Philosophical Society has a number of tickets available for Fellows on this special occasion at a cost of £40.
