Centre for Medical Genetics: Notice

On the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine, the General Board have agreed that the regulations for the Centre for Medical Genetics (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 627) should be rescinded and that the Centre should be re-established, with immediate effect, as an institution within the Faculty of Clinical Medicine under the new title of the Centre for Medical Genetics and Policy to be governed by the following regulations:

Centre for Medical Genetics and Policy

Management

1. The Centre for Medical Genetics and Policy shall be an institution within the Faculty of Clinical Medicine and shall be under the general control of a Committee of Management, which shall consist of:

(a) the Director;
(b) one person appointed by each of the following:

the General Board,
the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine,
the Council of the School of Biological Sciences,
the Council of the School of the Arts and Humanities,
the Council of the School of the Humanities and Social Sciences, and
the Council of the School of Technology,
provided that a person appointed by any one of the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine or the Councils of the Schools may also be the person appointed by the General Board;
(c) one person appointed by the Regional Office of the NHS Executive Eastern Region (or its successor body);
(d) not more than four persons co-opted at the discretion of the Committee.

2. Members in classes (b) and (c) shall be appointed in the Michaelmas Term to serve for four years from 1 January following their appointment. Members in class (d) shall serve until 31 December of the year in which they are co-opted or of the year next following, as the Committee shall determine at the time of their co-optation.

3. The Committee shall elect one of their members other than the Director to be their Chairman, to serve for three years from 1 January following his or her election. The Director of the Centre shall serve as Secretary of the Committee.

4. Subject to the powers of the Council, the General Board, and the Faculty Board of Clinical Medicine, the duties of the Committee shall be as follows:

(a) to promote teaching in the field of policy in Medical Genetics and in its public health, ethical, legal, and social implications, and to promote research in those fields and the publication of the results of such research;
(b) to co-operate with outside bodies in the encouragement of research in the policy, public health, ethical, legal, and social implications of Medical Genetics;
(c) to establish policies and procedures for the administration of grants, endowments, and other resources received for the benefit of the Centre and to determine and agree the respective responsibilities of the various Faculty Boards and University institutions participating in the Centre;
(d) to administer funds allocated to them for the purposes set out in (a) and (b) above;
(e) to supervise the work of staff at the Centre;
(f) to prepare annual estimates for submission to the General Board.

5. The Committee shall have the right of reporting to the University.

Director of the Centre

1. The Directorship of the Centre may be held concurrently with another University Office.

2. The Director shall be appointed by the General Board on the recommendation of the Committee of Management. He or she shall hold office for five years, and shall be eligible for re-appointment.

3. Under the general control of the Committee of Management, the Director shall be the administrative head of the Centre and shall be responsible for the promotion of the subject generally.

4. The Director shall be responsible for ensuring appropriate direction of the research in the Centre.
