Reform of Senior Academic Promotion Procedures: Notice

The revised procedure for considering applications for personal Professorships and Readerships is now in its fourth year of operation. The first promotions exercise for University Senior Lectureships was completed earlier this year. The General Board believe that it is now timely to review both promotion procedures, in the light of experience, with a view to:

clarifying the career structure for University teaching officers;

consolidating decision-making in relation to senior academic promotions;

reducing the workload on applicants, members of Committees, staff, administrative staff, and referees;

speeding up the timetable.

The Board have recently issued a consultation paper seeking the views of Faculty Boards, Councils of the Schools, and Heads of Departments and other institutions on suggestions for reforming the present arrangements.

The Board wish to give an opportunity to members of the Regent House to submit comments on the paper, which is available on the University website at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/cam-only/offices/personnel/promotion/.

Comments should be submitted to Dr M. J. Horne, Personnel Division, in writing or by e-mail to jms71@admin.cam.ac.uk, not later than 1 December 2001.
