JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN THE ARTS, HUMANITIES, OR SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Governing Body of King's College invites applications for a Junior Research Fellowship in the Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences. The Fellowship will be tenable for up to four years from 1 October 2002.

Graduates of any university are eligible, subject to the condition that they shall have obtained, or expect to obtain, a Ph.D. or equivalent. Candidates should expect to reside in Cambridge. If candidates are in doubt about their eligibility they should contact the Provost.

Applications should comprise (i) five copies of a completed application form, which may be obtained from the Provost's Secretary or from the College website (http://www.kings.cam.ac.uk/), and (ii) five copies of a statement of not more than 1,000 words of the nature of the applicant's research.

Not more than three persons should be approached by the candidates and asked to write direct to the Provost. These letters must reach the Provost not later than 23 November 2001, and at least two of the persons writing should have recent knowledge of the candidate's work. The candidate should send each referee a copy of their application. Each referee should be asked to comment on the candidate's achievements, and also to suggest the names of two additional readers who are not in the candidate's institution and to whom work would be sent if the candidate is shortlisted. The salary will be in the range of £14,982 to £19,144.

In addition to pursuing his or her research, the Research Fellow will be expected to take part in College life and activity and, where appropriate, to undertake a few hours of undergraduate teaching a week during term for which payment will be at normal supervision rates. The Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body, eligible to sit on College Committees, with the full privileges of a Fellow. Privileges include free lunch or dinner, with the possibility of limited financial support for expenses associated with the Fellow's research, a study room and possibly, single accommodation in College. Further information about King's College may be obtained from its website (http://www.kings.cam.ac.uk/).

Successful candidates travelling from outside the United Kingdom to take up a Fellowship may claim travel and removal expenses up to an agreed level.

Applications should be sent to the Provost, King's College, Cambridge, CB2 1ST, to arrive by 23 November 2001. Short-listed candidates will be expected to attend an interview on 30 January 2002, and, if a candidate is elected, the Fellowship will commence on 1 October 2002.
