UNIVERSITY OFFICES

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for an initial period of three or five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £22,299 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,390.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £19,486 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,193.

University Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science

University Lecturer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science to take up appointment on 1 October 2002. We intend to appoint a Philosopher of Science with areas of expertise that include biomedical ethics. The post will carry a specific responsibility for the organization of existing medical ethics teaching for undergraduate medical students in co-operation with the Faculty of Biology. Initial appointment will be for three years.

Posts in the University Offices (Research Services Division)

Assistant Registrary or Administrative Officer, Grade I, (Contracts Manager)

Duties will include advising and assisting researchers in evaluating and protecting intellectual property arising from their research, and working with them to conclude externally funded research agreements. The candidate will also foster strong relationships with University Faculties and Departments, by raising the profile and awareness of external funding opportunities that fit with their research strategies. Interviews will take place on 31 October 2001.

Assistant Treasurer (Financial Accountant)

Duties will include providing financial accounting support and guidance to the Research Grants and Contracts Section, the Division, and CUTS Ltd. The candidate will also be responsible for the production of statutory accounts for the University's technology transfer company and will act as its Company Secretary. Interviews will take place on 1 November 2001.

Appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age for an Assistant Registrary or Assistant Treasurer, or for periods not exceeding five years at a time for an Administrative Officer. An Administrative Officer who has reached the maximum of the scale may be appointed to the returing age. The current pensionable scales of stipends for an Assistant Registrary or Assistant Treasurer are £22,299 a year, rising by eleven increments to £34,390. The current pensionable scales for an Administrative Officer, Grade I, are £24,193 a year, rising by five annual increments to £29,414.

University Offices (Research Services Division)

Head of Pre-Award Group

The Research Services Division requires an experienced contracts professional to oversee and develop the systems and procedures for the busy group responsible for negotiating research agreements. You will manage a team of nine staff responsible for negotiating research contracts and processing applications worth more than £130m a year. Together with the Head of the Research Grants and Contracts Section, you will develop policy and strategy for the group and its services.

You will have several years of relevant experience of contract negotiation in a university, public sector, or commercial research environment, and can demonstrate previous management and strategic planning experience. You will have the vision, energy, and drive to manage a team delivering a high-quality user-oriented service.

Interviews will take place on 26 October 2001. The salary will be £39,590.

Contract Managers / Senior Contract Managers

The Research Services Division requires experienced contract negotiators to join a busy and expanding group responsible for the University's research collaboration agreements. You will advise and assist researchers in evaluating and protecting intellectual property arising from their research and work with them to conclude externally funded research agreements. You will also foster strong relationships with University Faculties and Departments by raising the profile and awareness of external funding opportunities that fit with their research strategies.

You will be highly-organized, familiar with dealing with complex contractual agreements, and used to working to tight deadlines. You will also have relevant experience of contract negotiation, be used to managing contractual relationships, and be proficient in using Windows-based IT packages.

The interview will take place on 31 October 2001. Salary will be in the range of £22,299 to £34,390 a year for Senior Contracts Managers, or to £29,414 a year for Contracts Managers, depending on experience.

Applications Manager

The Research Services Division requires an experienced research applications administrator to take responsibility for managing and developing the systems and procedures for processing research applications and the approval of awards. You will lead a small team advising and helping University staff in preparing applications to Research Councils, charities, and the European Commission. You will also foster strong relationships with University Faculties and Departments, providing training material and running courses on how to apply for funding and maximizing the funding on grants.

You will have extensive knowledge of the policies of research sponsors gained from experience of administering research applications in a University environment. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, be highly-organized, and proficient in using Windows-based IT packages.

The interview will take place on 5 November 2001. The salary will be £20,267 to £26,229 a year, depending on age and experience.

Head of Accounting Group

The Research Services Division requires an experienced accountant with vision and drive, to oversee and develop a new group responsible for providing accounting support and guidance to the Research Grants and Contracts Section, the Division as a whole, and the University's technology transfer company (CUTS Ltd). You will manage a team of six staff responsible for the financial, management, and systems accounting needs of the Section (research income of £120m a year), the Division budget of £1.5m a year and CUTS Ltd (turnover of £3m a year). Together with the Head of the Research Grants and Contracts Section, you will develop policy and strategy for the group and its services. You will also act as the main link with the Finance Division on all Divisional accounting issues.

You will have relevant experience of managing a team providing accounting support in a university or public sector environment. You will be a qualified accountant with several years of post-qualification experience, and will be familiar with setting up new systems and developing existing systems and procedures to meet new needs. You will have used a variety of accounting packages including Oracle Financials.

The interview will take place on 29 October 2001. The salary will be £39,590.
