AWARDS BY OUTSIDE BODIES

The Rank Prize Funds

OPTOELECTRONICS COMMITTEE PH.D. THESIS PRIZES 2001

The Rank Prize Funds intend to award up to two prizes, of £2,000 and £1,000 for Ph.D. research theses in optoelectronics or vision. The research must cover fundamental experimental or theoretical optoelectronic effects, including optical signal processing and the physiology of the eye, or their applications in such areas as laser technology, displays, optical communications, and astronomy.

The competition is open to students of all nationalities who submit a Ph.D. thesis to a UK university, where the oral examination takes place between 1 January 2001 and 31 December 2001. Nominations are made by a citation from the thesis supervisor, accompanied by a summary of the thesis written by the student, and two referee reports, with at least one from a different institution, and normally written by the internal and external Ph.D. examiners. The thesis itself should not be submitted.

Supervisors should nominate only individuals whose theses stand realistic chances of being judged the best or runner-up. The summary should not exceed three A4 sides, plus lists of any publications and patents, while the citation and referee reports are limited to a single side each. Judgements are made by the Optoelectronics Committee.

Nomination and referee reports must be received by 15 February 2002 at The Rank Prize Funds, 45 St Mary's Road, Ditton Hill, Surrey, KT6 5HB.
