University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for an initial period of three or five years, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £22,299 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £34,390.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £19,486 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,193.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering

The appointment will fall within the broad area of modern chemical engineering involving activity at the interface between science and engineering. Applications will be considered from graduates in chemical engineering, or associated branches of engineering or science, for example, biology, chemistry, materials science, mathematics, microbiology, or physics. A successful candidate will have, or will be expected to develop, a record of world-class research commensurate with the Department's international standing and research reputation. Teaching responsibilities will include contributing to all aspects of undergraduate courses and supervising graduate students.

University Lecturer in the School of Clinical Medicine

The Division of Anaesthesia invites applications from suitably qualified individuals for appointment to the University Lectureship in Anaesthesia. The successful applicant will join an expanding academic department, which participates in multidisciplinary research supported by substantial grants from the MRC, the Wellcome Foundation, and the Royal College of Anaesthetists. The person appointed will be required to participate in teaching and clinical work, and to undertake a programme of research. The current research and clinical focus of the Division is in the areas of intensive care and neuroscience, but high quality candidates with other research interests are strongly encouraged to apply and discuss their plan of research with Professor D. K. Menon.

Full registration with the GMC and acceptance on the appropriate GMC Specialist Register are required. Candidates should hold the FRCA (or equivalent) and a C.C.S.T. in Anaesthesia, or be within three months of obtaining it by the time of interview. They will have a proven track record in independent research, with a publication list appropriate for the position. It is highly desirable that they should have obtained a higher academic degree (or be in final stages of preparation for one). Salary will be on the clinical academic/honorary consultant scale.

University Lecturer in the Department of Pathology

Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer in Molecular and Cellular Microbiology in the Department of Pathology. The successful applicant is expected to establish a strong research programme to enhance or broaden our existing strengths in protein export and drug efflux, membrane protein structure and function, and the action of toxins and effectors on the mammalian host cell. We offer excellent research facilities, laboratory space, and interactions.

The appointee is expected to supervise Ph.D. students and contribute to undergraduate Microbiology teaching. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The post is available immediately. Salary is on the University Lecturer scale, see above.

University Lecturer in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics

Mathematicians with a well-established record of research in any branch of Pure Mathematics are invited to apply for this post. The appointment should commence on 1 October 2002, but is available from 1 January 2002.

Assistant Director of Research in the Department of Geography

The Department of Geography wishes to make an appointment to an Assistant Directorship of Research in the physical geography of polar environments. The preferred starting date is 1 March 2002, but other mutually agreeable starting dates can be considered. The successful applicant will be part of a large group of polar scientists based in the Department of Geography and the Scott Polar Research Institute.

Applications from individuals who specialize in the remote sensing of ice sheets (e.g., radio echo sounding, or SAR applications) and/or ice sheet modelling are especially welcomed. Initial appointment will be on the University's Assistant Directorship of Research scale (currently from £22,299 to £32,215 a year). Further particulars may be obtained from Professor A. D. Departmental Secretary (Administrative Matters), Grade A, in the Department of Physics

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the post of Departmental Secretary (Administrative Matters) in the Department of Physics to take up appointment as soon as possible. The Secretary will be responsible to the Head of the Department for all non-academic administration in the Department, including most personnel matters, and buildings and security. The Secretary will work closely with the Departmental Secretary (Academic Matters) and with the Finance Officer.

Candidates should be educated at least to degree level. Previous relevant experience in a senior administrative post is essential, preferably within the Higher Education sector.

Appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. A Departmental Secretary who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends is £24,193 to £35,995 a year.

Departmental Secretary (Finance) in the Computer Laboratory

Applications are invited for the proposed new post of Departmental Secretary (Finance) in the Computer Laboratory, to take up appointment on 1 October 2001, or as soon as possible thereafter. The post-holder, who will be responsible to the Head of Department, will manage all aspects of the financial resources of the Computer Laboratory, advising the Head of Department and other senior academic staff on financial matters, maximizing the Department's financial resources, and providing an environment in which individual officers understand the financial implications of their actions.

Applicants should have thorough knowledge, experience, and understanding of the University's financial procedures and policies, the ability to readily access and interpret them, to assess them in terms relevant to the Department, and to communicate them effectively to staff at all levels in the Department. High-level experience of a large computer-based financial system, ideally Oracle Financials, plus the ability to understand system configuration and operation, is essential.

Appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. A Departmental Secretary who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Departmental Secretary Grade C is £21,290 to £26,229 a year, according to age and experience.

Technical Officer in the Department of Physics

Applications are invited for a post as Technical Officer to support our work in construction of novel radio telescopes for microwave background astronomy. Ideally candidates will have experience of analogue electronics and RF systems at frequencies up to 20 GHz, familiarity with RF design packages such as HP ADS or Sonnet, and knowledge of microwave fabrication techniques, particularly in microstrip. Experience with cryogenic microwave amplifiers would be a bonus. Candidates must be able to work independently, taking responsibility for the design and development of telescope sub-systems, while also working as part of a project team.

A degree or equivalent qualification and experience in physics or electronic engineering is required.

Assistant Keepership (Department of Coins and Medals) in the Fitzwilliam Museum

Applications are invited for an Assistant Keepership in the Department of Coins and Medals, to be especially concerned with Ancient Greek, Roman, and Celtic coins, and to assist in general curatorial duties, including the care, improvement, and scholarly exploitation of the numismatic collections and library, improving documentation, assisting visitors, mounting exhibitions, and teaching numismatics. The appointment will be from 1 March 2002, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The appointment will be made for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure for an Assistant Keeper is five years, but all holders of the office are considered for possible appointment to the office of Senior Assistant Keeper during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends (age-related) is £19,486 a year, rising by five annual increments to £24,193.

Computer Officer in the Careers Service

The Careers Service is seeking to employ a Computer Officer to support the two existing Departmental Computer Officers in developing and running our IT systems. These currently consist of a Windows NT 4 domain and Windows 2000 web server, Windows 95 and 2000 clients, together with Office 97 and a suite of Access databases. Applicants must have at least three years' office experience, good IT problem solving skills, and experience of supporting PC users in a similar environment. We are looking for a clear communicator who can work effectively under pressure, educated to degree level or equivalent.

The salary will be in the range of £20,267 to £26,229 a year, depending on age and experience. The post is full-time and initially for one year with the possibility of renewal. Job share applications will be considered.
