Examination in Development Studies for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course), 2002: Notice

The Development Studies Committee give notice that in the academical year 2001-02 the subjects for the examination in Development Studies for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course) (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 464) will be as follows:

Group 1

1 Development economics
This subject will be examined by means of a three-hour written paper.
2 Institutions and development
For candidates taking Paper 1 above, this paper will be examined by means of:
either (a) a three-hour written paper
or (b) one 5,000-word essay and a two-hour written paper
or (c) two essays of 5,000 words each.
For candidates not taking Paper 1 above, this paper will be examined by means of:
either (a) a three-hour written paper
or (b) one 5,000-word essay and a two-hour written paper.
3 Sociology and politics of development
This subject will be examined by means of two essays of 5,000 words each.

Group 2

10 Quantitative methods in economics and finance (Subject 301 from the examination in Finance)
11 Topics in industrial and financial economics (Subject 410 from the examination in Economics)
13 Financial organization and economic growth (Subject 520 from the examination in Economics)
14 Philosophical issues in economics (Subject 650 from the examination in Economics)
15 The methodology of economics (Subject 660 from the examination in Economics)
16 National planning and economic policy (Subject 5 from the examination in Land Economy)
18 Social anthropology and development (Paper 3a from the examination in Social Anthropology)
20 Suspended for 2001-02
22 Globalization, big business, and developing countries (Paper MP13 from the examination in Management Studies)
24 Development management
25 The sociology and politics of population

The Committee give notice that in the examination to be held in 2002 the subjects of Group 2 will be examined as follows:

Subject 10 will be examined by means of a three-hour written paper and a project

Subject 11 will be examined by means of one 4,000-word and two 2,000-word essays

Subject 13 will be examined by means of two 4,000-word essays

Subject 14 will be examined by means of four 2,000-word essays

Subjects 15, 22, and 24 will be examined by means of two 5,000-word essays

Subject 16 will be examined by means of a three-hour written paper

Subject 18 will be examined by means of either two 5,000-word essays or a three-hour written paper

Subject 25 will be examined by means of either two 5,000-word essays or one 5,000-word essay and a two-hour written paper

The Development Studies Committee also give notice that options in Group 2 may be added to or removed from the above list by the division of Michaelmas Term 2001. A further Notice will be issued if any such changes are made.
