Oriental Studies Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 365)

The regulations have been amended so that students may combine classical Hebrew with a modern European language in Part II of the Oriental Studies Tripos. The possibility of submitting a dissertation in place of one paper in the whole subject Egyptology, and an additional paper in the Mesopotamian option for the whole subject Early Civilizations of the Aegean and Near East have been introduced in Part II of the Tripos. The titles of certain papers have also been amended.

With effect from 1 October 2001

Regulation 3(iv).

By amending the title of option (10) from 'Hebrew and Israeli Studies' to 'Hebrew Studies'.

Regulation 11(a).

Assyriology

By amending the titles of Papers As. 3 and As. 17 so as to read:

As. 3. Introduction to Mesopotamian civilization.
As. 17. Prehistory of the Near East (also serves as Paper A21 in Part IIA and Part IIB of the Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos).

Egyptology

By amending the title of Paper E. 6 so as to read:

E. 6. Human societies: the comparative perspective (Paper 3 of Part I of the Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos).

Regulation 15.

By amending the Schedules to this regulation as follows:

SCHEDULE IIA (Whole subjects)

(3) Early Civilizations of the Aegean and Near East

By inserting in sub-paragraph (c) after paper As. 15 the paper As. 17.

(4) Egyptology

By replacing sub-paragraph (b) so as to read:

(b) either (i) E. 13-15, 18-19;
or (ii) four papers from E. 13-15, 18-19, and a dissertation;
or (iii) E. 18-22.

SCHEDULE IIB (Half-subjects)

(10) Hebrew and Israeli Studies

By replacing this option so as to read:

(10) Hebrew Studies
either Hebrew and Israeli Studies
(a) H.15;
(b) Either (i) two papers chosen from H.11-14, 16-18;
or (ii) one paper chosen from H. 11-14, 16-19, and a dissertation;
(c) Hebrew oral;
or Hebrew Studies
(a) H.11, 12;
(b) one paper chosen from H. 13-14, 16-18;
(c) either one further paper chosen from H. 13-14, 16-18, or a dissertation.

Regulation 16.

By replacing this option so as to read:

Assyriology

By amending the title of Paper As. 15 so as to read:

Supplementary regulations for Papers As. 15 Mesopotamian special subject and E. 21 Ancient Egypt, 4 have been introduced as follows:

With effect from 1 October 2001

Paper E. 21. Ancient Egypt, 4

This paper will be examined by (a) a written paper and (b) the submission of records of such course-work undertaken during the courses leading to the examination as shall be determined from time to time by the Faculty Board. Parts (a) and (b) will carry equal weight.

With effect from 1 October 2002

Paper As. 15. Mesopotamian special subject

The examination for this paper will consist of the submission of records of such course-work done during the courses leading to the examination as shall be determined from time to time by the Faculty Board; such records shall bear as an indication of good faith the signatures of the teachers under whose direction the work was performed.
