University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Engineering

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a University Lecturership or a University Assistant Lectureship in the field of Production Technology. This new post has been established as part of a significant expansion of the activities of the Institute for Manufacturing within the Manufacturing and Management Division. The person appointed will be expected to make a major contribution to the development of education and research in production process technology and to extend the Institute's strong links with industry. Applicants should have a broad background in engineering, materials science, or a related discipline, preferably with some industrial experience, and have a proven record of innovative research in manufacturing technology. Areas of interest might include conventional and unconventional machining, forming or joining processes, surface engineering, materials recycling, micro-scale fabrication, and the application of emerging materials.

Appointment at University Lecturer level will be for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £21,435 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £33,058 (under review). Appointment at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £18,731 a year, rising by five annual increments to £23,256 (under review).

There will be opportunities for consultancy work with industry through the Industry Links Unit of the Institute for Manufacturing. Limited start-up research funding is also available from the Department.

Assistant Registrary in the University Offices (General Board Division)

Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Registrary, to be seconded to the School of the Biological Sciences, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The successful candidate is also to be appointed as the Secretary of the Faculty Board of Biology and will act as Deputy to the Secretary of the School. The post-holder will undertake other responsibilities in the Faculty of Biology, the Veterinary School, and two research institutes: the Wellcome/CRC Institute and the MRC Cambridge Centre for Brain Repair. There are also important interactions with the Clinical School. Administrative experience is essential, as is computing experience.

The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, unless the Council waive this requirement, in which case the appointment will be for a period not exceeding five years. Reappointment may be to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Registrary is £21,435 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £33,058 (under review).

Temporary Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic

The Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic is seeking to appoint to a temporary post, at Assistant Lecturer level, for three years from 1 October 2001. The person appointed will be required to offer teaching in Scandinavian History and Culture of the Viking Age, as well as to participate in other areas of the Department's work.

The pensionable scale of stipends is £18,731 a year, rising by five increments, to £23,256 (under review). The salary on appointment is normally directly related to the age of the appointee.

Isaac Newton Trust Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of Classics

The Isaac Newton Trust CTO Scheme

Owing to the generosity of the Isaac Newton Trust, the Faculty of Classics is able to advertise a Newton Trust Affiliated Lectureship, for appointment from 1 October 2001 for up to two years. The terms of the scheme require that Newton Trust Affiliated Lecturers are Fellows of Colleges who are non-University Teaching Officers but who receive their prime stipend from their College for teaching undergraduates.

Newton Trust Affiliated Lecturers are expected to give twenty-four lectures a year for the Faculty, to examine from time to time, to supervise Research Students, and to be involved in Faculty teaching arrangements. Affiliated Lecturers will be paid at the current University hourly rate for lectures given and, in addition, will receive a payment of £500 a year.

The Faculty will be hoping to make an appointment in any area of Classics. As with all appointments in the Faculty, the Newton Trust Affiliated Lecturer will be expected to contribute to language teaching.
