Data Protection Act 1998: Notice

In response to the passing of the Data Protection Act 1998, the Council established a Data Protection Working Party to consider the issues and bring forward policy and procedural proposals to the central bodies. The recommendations of the Working Party were referred to various University and College bodies in July 2000.

The University Data Protection Officer will shortly be issuing general advice to Heads of University institutions. This will include ensuring that institutions have a nominated Faculty or Departmental Data Protection Officer who will be responsible for processing subject access requests and acting as a point of contact for data protection queries and compliance within their institution.

The Council have approved a budget for training. Training courses will be available to Faculty and Departmental Data Protection Officers and other directly affected staff. A web-based training course, designed to raise awareness and measure understanding of data protection issues, is planned for introduction, and information will be made available through the data protection website (www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/dpa/), which contains advice issued within the University and links to national codes of practice.

Any queries on the Data Protection Act should be addressed to the University Data Protection Officer, 10 Peas Hill, Cambridge, CB2 3PN (e-mail data-protection@admin.cam.ac.uk).
