Information for contract research staff

The University of Cambridge has contributed to the development of a new service which has been launched to help contract research staff (including technicians) nearing the end of their appointment find suitable alternative employment. CVs.ac.uk (www.CVs.ac.uk/ - a secure site) acts as a one-stop internet 'bank' to hold the CVs of staff seeking employment opportunities. Registered employing institutions may then access the site to search for possible candidates for vacancies, although this will not necessarily replace the need to advertise posts.

The service was developed by the University of Oxford, supported by the University of Cambridge, University College London, Imperial College, the University of Bristol, the University of Birmingham, the University of Manchester, and the University of Warwick as founding institutions, and is now used by over thirty leading UK research universities.

The service is two-fold:

- a CV network to help contract researchers at member institutions smooth their career progression, and advertise their services to a wide audience;
- for potential employers at member institutions and others, both within and outside the Higher Education sector, a database of some of the most highly skilled individuals in the UK research sector, searchable by skill, availability, and experience.

Research staff on short-term contracts wishing to make use of this service by registering a CV will need a Cambridge University user reference number, which is obtainable from departmental administrators.

An employing Department that wishes to search the database of CVs will also need a user reference number which will be available shortly from the Personnel Division. Accessing the site will enable Departments to select the 'Find employment candidates' option from the CVs.ac.uk welcome page. Included in the service to employers is the opportunity to search by any of three processes: (i) a structured search of main fields; (ii) a sophisticated free-form search for any logical combination of specified job-related attributes, qualifications, and availability; and (iii) a browse search for matches within the prime and key skills fields.
