DOMUS GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

Merton College is offering three or four Domus Graduate Scholarships in 2001, in two separate competitions, A and B. The Scholarships are intended to assist students of outstanding academic excellence who for financial reasons would not otherwise be able to study at the University of Oxford. They cover full board and accommodation in the College, College and University fees, and an additional grant of £2,800. Subject to satisfactory progress, the Scholarships will be tenable for three years.

Competition A is open to graduates of any university, who are not ordinarily resident in the UK, and have not done more than two years of postgraduate study or research, and propose to begin a course of study leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford in October 2001 in any of the subjects normally acceptable for graduate study at the College, and have no other funding which would allow them to do so. The College intends to award two Scholarships. The closing date for this competition is 23 February 2001. Applicants who have not been accepted as doctoral students by the relevant Faculty or Department of the University by Friday, 16 March 2001 will be rejected. This process, over which the College has no control, may take about two months. Those interested in applying should contact the Assistant Tutorial Secretary, Merton College, Oxford, OX1 4JD (tel. +44 (0)1865 276299, fax +44 (0)1865 286500, e-mail julie.gerhardi@admin.merton.ox.ac.uk) as soon as possible to ask for further particulars. Those who have not already applied for admission to the University are advised to contact the Oxford University Graduate Admissions Office, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JD (e-mail graduate.admissions@admin.ox.ac.uk), or the relevant Department of the University. They should also consult the University's Graduate Studies Prospectus, obtainable from the Graduate Admissions Office, and on the University's home page (http://www.ox.ac.uk/), where Departmental addresses (Appendix 1) and much other important information may be found.

Competition B is open to graduates of any university with a first class honours degree, who are ordinarily resident in the UK, and have not done more than two years of postgraduate study or research, and have been accepted to begin a course of study leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford in October 2001 in any subject normally acceptable for graduate study at the College, and have no other funding which would allow them to do so. The College intends to award one or two Scholarships. Those interested in applying should contact the Assistant Tutorial Secretary as above. Enquiries may be made at any time after 1 January 2001, but applications should be submitted no earlier than 17 August 2001. The closing date will be 3 September 2001.

GREENDALE SCHOLARSHIP 2001

Merton College proposes to elect a Greendale Scholar from 1 October 2001. Greendale Scholarships are for Swiss nationals or Swiss residents, who are graduates of, or in their final year of study at a Swiss university. The term 'Swiss resident' means an individual of whatever nationality who holds a category 'B' or a category 'C' residence permit issued by the government of Switzerland. Candidates should have completed their first degree between 1 May 1998 and 1 October 2001, and should have spent no more than two years in postgraduate study or research. The Scholarship will run for up to three years. It covers full board and lodging at Oxford, all University and College fees, and a contribution towards other costs.

The Greendale Scholar will be required to register for a degree course or some other formal qualification within the University of Oxford. In no circumstances will a Scholarship be conferred upon someone who is not able to enter the University in October 2001.

Further particulars and copies of the application form may be obtained from the Assistant Tutorial Secretary, Tutorial Office, Merton College, Oxford, OX1 4JD (tel. +44 (0)1865 276299, fax +44 (0)1865 286500, e-mail julie.gerhardi@merton.ox.ac.uk). The closing date for applications and references is Friday, 23 February 2001.
