Summary

• There is very little change in the figures for 2000 compared with 1999.

Table 1

• The proportion of women within those accepted has increased from 45% to 48%.

• For Home applications, the acceptances by school type are:

  Maintained	52%

• Within the maintained sector, 7% come from maintained grammar schools, 11% from FE colleges and 34% from comprehensive and other non-selective schools.

• 89% of those accepted achieve three grade A's, counting their three best A-level results and excluding General Studies.

  For comparison, 10% of those accepted by all UK universities, achieve these grades.

• The proportion of those accepted who declare that they have an ethnic minority background is 10%. In addition, 5% choose not to declare their ethnic origin.

These figures are published here for the first time. They show considerable variation from year to year. For further information on Table 9, contact individual College Admissions Offices.

Background to the collection of the statistics

1. The tables show the total numbers of applications and acceptances for October 2000, excluding candidates for the B.Ed Degree and the B.A. in Education Studies. They exclude 397 applicants through UCAS who did not submit a preliminary application form.
2. The figures refer to a single cohort of applicants, irrespective of the year of subsequent entry. All candidates are regarded as 2000 entrants although some may have deferred entry until a later date. Those who applied before 15 October 1998 and received a deferred offer for 2000 are also excluded.
3. The acceptance figures include only those candidates who received a firm offer of a place. They exclude those applicants who received conditional offers upon performance at A-level (or equivalent examinations) who did not subsequently fulfil those conditions and those who subsequently declined their offers. Table 8 indicates the total number of conditional offers made.
4. Percentages have been rounded up to the nearest whole number and totals do not always add up to 100.
