Trinity Hall

Trinity Hall has a number of award categories to offer, detailed below under two headings: studentships (basically full-cost scholarships covering fees and maintenance) and bursaries (smaller top-up funding under several named benefactions and under a general fund).

STUDENTSHIPS/SCHOLARSHIPS

In making any of these full-cost awards first consideration will be given to candidates who nominate Trinity Hall as their College of first preference in CIGAS Form A, though we give consideration to all applicants who have been accepted into membership of Trinity Hall. Tenure of the studentships/scholarships is conditional on the elected students being confirmed by the Board of Graduate Studies as a registered Graduate Student working towards a Ph.D. and being, or becoming, a member of Trinity Hall in October. Normally a first class degree from the university of origin will be required, and confirmation of election may be contingent upon satisfactory results in final degree examinations. The value of the awards will be determined after considering a successful candidate's income (fee and maintenance) from any AHRB, ESRC or other studentships. The amount of the studentships and scholarships (including fees and maintenance, and reasonable research costs) will be a full-cost level (equivalent to that offered by the AHRB, ESRC etc.) plus a negotiable budget to support essential research-related costs. The awards are subject to reviews of diligence and progress and may be held for up to three years.

Trinity Hall Research Studentship

One or more unrestricted Research Studentships are offered annually. Candidates must be under twenty-five years of age on 1 December of the year in which they come into residence, and (on coming into residence) must be graduates of a university or other degree awarding institution in the United Kingdom (including Cambridge).

Nightingale Studentship

This Studentship was established in the memory of the late Michael Nightingale, a member of the College who died in 1991, and is funded from his bequest. The Studentship is open to all qualified graduates, of whatever university and whatever nationality, and the College will give first preference to those who wish to conduct doctoral research (or are already engaged in such research) in the field of mental health.

Tidmarsh Scholarship

The Tidmarsh Scholarship provides finance for a full-cost award every three years (starting in October 2003, 2006, 2009 etc). There is no subject restriction, but the Scholarship is applicable only to Canadian citizens under 26 years old who graduated with first class honours from a recognised Canadian or American university, who have applied to Trinity Hall as their first choice, been accepted by the College and been accepted for an ORS award. The Scholarship is administered by the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust. You will be sent an application to apply for this Scholarship, the ORS and other awards, by the Board of Graduate Studies on receipt of your completed CIGAS Form A.

The application closing date for the above mentioned studentships/scholarships is 15 April 2001 and decisions will be made in May 2001.

BURSARIES

In making any of the following bursaries first consideration will be given to candidates who nominate Trinity Hall as their College of first preference and tenure is conditional on the elected students being accepted by the Board of Graduate Studies, and be, or become, a Graduate Student member of Trinity Hall in October.

Trinity Hall Research Bursaries

The College offers annually up to eight Research Bursaries, to a total value of £5000, ranging in value from £100 to £1000. The Bursaries are renewable for up to three years, and are applicable principally to graduates of universities other than Cambridge who are embarking on postgraduate courses leading to the degree of Ph.D. Bursaries are tenable at Trinity Hall only. Decisions are based on considerations primarily of academic merit and secondarily on financial need.

Thomas Waraker Postgraduate Scholarship in Law

The College offers annually a Thomas Waraker Postgraduate Scholarship in Law to a candidate for admission to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, who, on the date of coming into residence, is under the age of twenty-five years and is a graduate of a university in the British Commonwealth (other than Cambridge), or of a university in the United States of America or in South Africa, and who propose either (a) to read as an Affiliated or Graduate Student for Part II of the Law Tripos and/or the LL.M. Examination or (b) to become a Graduate Student in the field of law. The value of the Scholarship will be not less than £150 nor more than £300 a year, depending on the Scholar's other sources of income. The Scholarship will be awarded for two years in the first instance; a Graduate Student reading for a Ph.D. will be eligible to have the award extended for a third year.

Lord Morris of Borth-y-Gest Studentship

The College offers annually a Studentship tenable for one academic year by a candidate who wishes to read for an M.Phil. (one-year) course in Criminology, International Relations, or Linguistics at Trinity Hall. The value of the Studentship will be determined after consideration of a successful candidate's income from other studentships or similar sources and will not exceed £2,500.

Henry Fawcett Memorial Bursary

The College offers annually a Bursary to the value of £500 tenable for one academic year by a candidate not at present a member of the Cambridge University who wishes to read for a mathematical subject.

The closing date for the above named bursaries is 1 August 2001 and decisions will be made in September 2001.

An application form for any of the Colleges studentships or bursaries may be obtained from Julie Powley, Graduate Officer, Trinity Hall, Cambridge, CB2 1TJ (tel. 01223 332517; fax 01223 332537; e-mail: jp219@cus.cam.ac.uk).

All applications should be accompanied by a full curriculum vitae, and (for candidates for a degree with research component) a summary research proposal. The College's decision is strongly influenced by the references supplied - both what is said by the candidate's nominated referees and the identity of those referees. At the same time as sending your application to Trinity Hall, you should send a copy also to your referees, asking them to send a confidential reference (unseen by you) directly to us. For each of the College's awards the Graduate Officer (Julie Powley) will act as your correspondent, helping you with your preparation and answering queries. She will prepare dossiers for consideration by the Graduate Tutor (Dr Christopher Padfield) according to the timescales identified above.
