University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic

Applications are invited for a post at University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer level from those qualified in the following fields: Old English Language and Literature; Old English and Old Norse Philology.

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095 (under review). Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579 (under review).

Computer Officer, Grade III, in the Department of Chemical Engineering

Computer Officer, Grade III, in the Department of Chemical Engineering. The person appointed will work with and report to the Department's existing Computer Officers on all aspects of the Department's computing needs, including installation and management of LANs, Novell servers and workstations, UNIX workstations and associated software, and on the requirements of teaching staff and administrators. Previous experience of the following items would be an advantage: PC hardware, Macintosh hardware and software, Windows 95/98/NT/2000, Novell Netware 4.1, and UNIX.

The appointment will be for up to five years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade III, is £18,915 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,479 (under review).

Librarian, Grade C, in the Centre of South Asian Studies

Librarian, Grade C, at the Centre of South Asian Studies, to assist the Librarian with the development and management of the Centre's archives and day-to-day administration of the Centre.

Candidates should have a good honours degree and ideally a relevant postgraduate qualification in archives, film, library, or information science. Some experience in academic librarianship and training to ALA is desirable. The candidate must be IT literate, have experience of automated library systems, and knowledge of MARC cataloguing and Universal Decimal Classification. He or she must show a particular interest in the preservation of and/or use of photographic, film, and written archives. First and foremost, he or she must be a good communicator, be able to work and liaise with a wide variety of people, and be willing and able to work on his or her own initiative.

The Librarian, Grade C, is responsible for the general administration of the Centre, management of the Centre's website, and the development and exploitation of the Centre's archives - in particular the preservation and use of the film archive, supervision of reader services, and generally assisting the Librarian.

The Centre is in the process of transferring its important collection of amateur cinéfilm to DVD for preservation and access purposes and the post-holder will play a major role in this process and in the subsequent exploitation of the collection.

The pensionable scale of stipends for the post is £16,286 a year, rising by four annual increments to £19,869 (under review). Appointment is for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

Clinical Psychologist in the University Counselling Service

The University Counselling Service is looking for a Clinical Psychologist to join the core counselling and psychotherapy team offering a range of therapeutic interventions to undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University. The position would suit someone who is in the early stages of his or her professional career and who would enjoy working within a supportive and hard-working team with an interesting clientele.

The person appointed will be expected primarily to offer cognitive behavioural therapy to both individuals and groups of students. There is some flexibility over the hours, but it is intended to appoint at or near to full-time.

The salary will be on a scale £20,811 a year, rising by eleven increments to £32,095 pro rata (award pending). The successful candidate should be available to take up appointment as soon as possible after 1 October 2000; the position is initially for three years with the possibility of renewal.

Posts in the Careers Service

Information Services Manager

The Careers Service needs someone with excellent organizational skills to help run its well-resourced information service. Applicants should possess a degree, have experience in the management and presentation of information, be imaginative, with good communication skills, and be adept at coping with pressure (over 3,000 users in busy weeks). In addition to staff management and training experience, they must have extensive IT skills, including the use of websites, spreadsheets, and word-processing. A professional qualification in information management would be an advantage. The starting date is 1 October 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary (under review) will be on a scale from £21,597 to £32,095 a year. A full-time post, this appointment will be for five years in the first instance. The Careers Service has a no smoking policy.

Part-time Computer Associate, Grade III or Grade IV

The Careers Service is looking for a part-time Computer Associate (0.6) to support the Departmental Computer Officer in developing and running the Service's IT systems. These currently consist of a PC network running Windows NT 4 Server and Windows 95 clients together with Office 97 and a suite of ACCESS databases. Applicants must have at least one year's office experience, good IT problem solving skills, and experience of supporting PC users in a similar environment. The successful candidate will be a clear communicator who can work effectively under pressure, ideally educated to degree level or equivalent.

The salary will be in the range £15,361 to £24,479 a year, pro rata (under review), depending on age and experience. The post is initially for one year.

Administrator in the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research Campaign Institute of Cancer and Developmental Biology

Applications are invited for this post, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The Wellcome CRC Institute, part of the School of the Biological Sciences at the University, is a highly successful research institute of international standing. Located in the centre of the city, adjacent to other University Departments to which it is affiliated, the Institute (total staff of approximately 200) has fourteen research groups, a good complement of support staff, and excellent core facilities.

The Administrator reports to the Institute's Chairman and, working closely with the Scientific Group Leaders, has responsibility for all administrative matters and financial resources, including the management of technical and clerical staff, equipment, space, and services infrastructure. The Institute has recently been awarded a substantial sum of money by the Joint Infrastructure Fund for relocation into a new building on an adjacent site. It will be the Administrator's responsibility to help to oversee this venture, liaising with the Group Leaders, architects, and the University's Estate Management and Building Service.

The successful applicant is likely to have been educated to degree level with previous relevant experience in a senior administrative post, preferably in a scientific higher education establishment with a research grant portfolio. A proven ability in managing resources and staff is essential, and knowledge of university administration, financial processes, and systems would be ideal.

Funds are available for this unestablished, grant-funded post for five years in the first instance, to be paid on a pensionable scale equivalent to that of a Departmental Secretary, Grade B, in the range £20,811 to £32,095 a year (under review). The Institute operates a no smoking policy.
