Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturer in the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics

University Lecturer in any area of Theoretical Geophysics. The Lecturer will be part of the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics, established between the Departments of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and Earth Sciences, under the Directorship of Professor H. E. Huppert, FRS. The Institute invites applications from exceptionally able theoretically-inclined scientists whose research is in any area of the application of physics and mathematics to understanding the Earth, which includes at least the topics of geodynamics, geological fluid mechanics, geomagnetism, mantle mineral, physics, meteorology, oceanography, and seismology.

Ten copies of a curriculum vitae, lists of publications, a 1,000-word statement of current research and intended research directions, and the names, addresses, and e-mail addresses of three referees should be sent to the Administrator, Department of Earth Sciences, Downing Street, Cambridge, CB2 3EQ, by 15 September 2000. Candidates are requested to ask their referees to write direct to the Administrator by the same date (e-mail mij10@esc.cam.ac.uk).

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Earth Sciences

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in either:

(i) any aspect of the physics and chemistry of natural materials including biological materials. The Department is interested in extending the range of its research activities in theoretical, computational, or experimental aspects of these fields to include, for example, high pressure diffraction spectroscopy studies, biomineralization, microstructures (organic/inorganic, solid/fluid), and nuclear radiation damage and confinement. It welcomes applications from physicists, chemists, biochemists, and material scientists, as well as earth scientists; or

(ii) any aspect of geophysics, and in particular, the areas of marine geophysics, seismology (including both earthquake and 3D or 4D reflection seismology), gravity, tectonics, planetary sciences, and the application of physics to other fields in the earth sciences. The Department welcomes applications from physicists and mathematicians as well as earth scientists.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Politics. The successful candidate should have an interest in the politics of the modern state and in the conceptual and theoretical issues that arise in understanding these. Applications are welcome from those with an interest in a particular aspect of the politics of modern states, the politics of a particular state or set of states, or international politics.

Chief Executive

The Trust is seeking a senior manager with initiative and drive to lead a small but growing charity, which was established ten years ago to facilitate access to higher education for students with a complex disability or chronic illness. Through Bridget's Hostel the Trust provides appropriate care and support to students during their time in Cambridge, developing each individual's capacity for independent living, learning, and work. The successful candidate should have financial/accounting experience, an understanding of fundraising issues, and, preferably, familiarity with the charitable sector.

This post is not necessarily a conventional full-time post and family friendly hours and holiday arrangements will be subject to negotiation. The salary will be £20,000 (negotiable).

Volunteer Treasurer

As a newly-established company limited by guarantee, the Trust seeks a volunteer Treasurer to join the Board of Directors and take the lead responsibility for the overall financial workings of the organization, including its investment strategy. It would particularly welcome approaches from people with an accountancy, company secretary, or bursarial background.
