Land Economy Tripos

The regulations for the Land Economy Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 303) have been amended as set out below. The purpose of the amendments is (i) to change the content of Papers 6 and 15 of the Tripos and to amend the titles and supplementary regulations for the papers accordingly; (ii) to introduce an element of project work in Paper 4; (iii) to remove the prohibition against candidates offering Paper 3 if they have already offered a specified paper on an another Tripos; and (iv) to introduce the provision that candidates for Paper 15 in Part II should have taken Paper 6 previously as Paper 15 builds on the work presented in the course for the earlier paper. The regulations have been amended, with effect from 1 October 2000, as follows:

Regulation 12.

(A) By retitling Papers 6 and 15 as follows:
Paper 6. Fundamentals of finance and investment.
Paper 15. Advanced techniques in finance and investment for real estate.

Paper 15 is also moved from Group IV to Group V.

(B) By inserting in the first and second sentences of the final paragraph after 'Papers 3,' the number '4,'.

Regulation 14.

(A) By omitting in paragraph (1) of the provisos the words 'who has obtained honours in one of the examinations specified in the Schedule to these regulations or'

(B) By omitting paragraph (5) of the provisos.

Regulation 16.

By amending sub-paragraph (a) so as to read:

(a) A candidate who has previously obtained honours in Part IB of the Land Economy Tripos shall offer
(i) four papers chosen from Groups II-V, including at least two papers from Group V; provided that a candidate shall not offer any paper that he or she has previously offered in another Honours Examination, and provided also that a candidate shall not, without leave of the Board of Land Economy, offer Paper 15 unless that candidate has attained a satisfactory standard in Paper 6 in Part IB;
(ii) a dissertation, which shall be submitted in accordance with the requirements of Regulation 17.

SCHEDULE

By rescinding the Schedule.

The supplementary regulations for the Land Economy Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 308) have been amended, with effect from the same date, as follows:

Group I

Paper 3

By removing from the final sentence in the text for Paper 3 the words 'involving Information Technology'.

Paper 4

By adding at the end of the text for Paper 4 the words 'The examination for this paper includes the submission of a report on a project (see below).'

Group II

By amending the text for Paper 6 so as to read:

Paper 6. Fundamentals of finance and investment

An introduction to the analytical techniques for identifying risk/return opportunities in real estate and other financial markets, and the different types of funding/investment strategies available to real estate professionals.

The examination for this paper includes the submission of a report on a project (see below).

Group IV

By removing Paper 15 from this Group.

Group V

By inserting the following supplementary regulation for Paper 15:

Paper 15. Advanced techniques in finance and investment for real estate

An introduction to advanced methods in the valuation and financing of real estate, mixed asset portfolio allocation, and risk management.

The examination for this paper includes the submission of a report on a project (see below).

Groups I , II, and V

Papers 3, 4, 6, and 15: project reports

The project to be undertaken for each of these papers shall be specified by the Board of Land Economy and announced not later than the division of the Lent Term. Candidates will be required to submit in typescript, by a date to be announced by the Board, an account of the project in the form of an extended essay. This account, which must be in English, should not exceed 4,000 words in length (including notes, but excluding appendices and bibliography).1 It should report the statistical and other sources and techniques used by the candidate as well as presenting the candidate's results and conclusions. Each candidate will be required to sign a declaration that the project and the report on it are his or her own work, unaided except as may be specified in the declaration, and that the report does not contain material that has already been used to any substantial extent for a comparable purpose; if two or more candidates have undertaken a project in collaboration, they will each be required to indicate the extent of their contribution.
