University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturer in the Faculty of English

University Lecturer in one or more of the following fields: English Literature, 1300-1550; English Literature, 1550-1730; English Literature, 1830 - present; American Literature; Drama. Applicants must have an outstanding publications record and must be in a position to take up the post not later than 1 January 2001.

University Lecturer in the Department of Medicine

University Lecturer in the Department of Medicine, in the School of Clinical Medicine. The Department has a wide range of interests and a multi-divisional structure. This post will be held in the Division of Diabetes and Endocrinology. The post-holder will be expected to develop an independent programme of research in metabolism, which synergizes with existing work in the School and the Department in the areas of diabetes and obesity. Applications from individuals with expertise in the areas of murine genetic manipulation and/or neuroendocrinology will be particularly welcome. The post is available from 1 October 2000.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Sociology to augment the Faculty's existing strengths. It welcomes applications from candidates who would be able to contribute to teaching and research in any of the following areas: the sociology of economic and/or political institutions; the sociology of media and communications; the sociology of gender and sexualities; the sociology of the family. While the Faculty would welcome applications outside the specified areas from candidates with outstanding research and teaching records, it has a preference for candidates who are able to combine theoretical concerns with relevant empirical research. The successful candidate would be expected to contribute to the teaching of the core Sociology curriculum.

Computer Officer, Grade II (PC Support Expert), in the University Computing Service

The University Computing Service, which provides facilities and services in support of research and teaching, has a vacancy in the Technical User Support Division for a Computer Officer, Grade II (PC Support Expert). The successful applicant will be expected to have a wide knowledge of PC hardware and software, including systems and networking experience. The post-holder will join a small dynamic team which provides Microsoft operating systems and PC applications support to other technical staff and users throughout the University. The post will involve liaison with members of staff and students of the University and the provision of a wide range of advice and support. The post-holder will be involved in the development and running of training courses and the preparation of documentation materials, and will be expected to take a lead in keeping up to date in this rapidly developing technical field.

The applicant should have at least three years' experience in the delivery of IT support and must possess good interpersonal and troubleshooting skills. A background in an academic support environment could be an advantage.

The appointment will be for up to three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time, or, when appropriate, to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade II, is £23,521 a year, rising by four annual increments to £27,451.

Computer Officer, Grade II or Grade III, in the Faculty of Law

Computer Officer, Grade II or Grade III, to take up appointment by 1 September 2000. The Faculty's computing staff has recently consisted of three full-time employees. Two have now resigned on promotion to jobs in other institutions and one will shortly go on maternity leave to return on a part-time basis in November. The person appointed will assist in all aspects of the running of the Law Faculty Network. The network includes about 140 networked machines, which are used mainly with OFFICE, e-mail, and access to legal databases, some web-based and others on CD-ROMs networked locally. Some support for Faculty members in outlying institutions is also needed. User support includes a helpdesk, open during all normal working hours.

The post-holder will take responsibility for the Faculty's network and manage the computing team. The post is designated Computer Officer, Grade III. For a suitable candidate the Faculty would be applying for leave to promote to Computer Officer, Grade II, as soon as the University permits, and in the interim the Faculty would make up the salary differential between the two grades.

The appointment will be for three years or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time, or, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

Computer Officer, Grade II: £23,521 a year, rising by four annual increments to £27,451.

Computer Officer, Grade III: £18,915 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,479.

Assistant Registrary in the University Offices (General Board Division)

Assistant Registrary in the General Board Division of the University Offices, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The duties will include assisting in the work of the central committees responsible for the deployment of the resources needed to support the academic programme of the University. The person appointed will support the process of resource allocation to Faculties and Departments, and will be expected to play a substantial role in the development and implementation of policy in this area. Applicants should be educated to degree level and have substantial relevant experience within Higher Education or a related field.

The appointment will be made for an initial period of three years, unless that requirement is waived by the Council, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Registrary is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Head of Finance, Administration, and IT in the University Development Office

The University Development Office is seeking to fill the position of Head of Finance, Administration, and IT. Reporting to the Operations Director, the post-holder will be responsible for all the financial planning and budgeting for the Development Office, supervising the preparation of management accounts, reports for senior University Officers and Trustees of the Cambridge Foundation, and the receipt, banking, and transfer of donations. He or she will work closely with the fundraising managers to develop return on investment criteria for all fundraising activities and monitor response rates and income received. Maintaining effective internal financial controls in line with the University's accounting policies and liaising with the Audit Committee of the Cambridge Foundation are important functions. The post-holder will supervise the Development Office's Information Technology and office administration and a team of seven staff.

Educated to degree level, the successful candidate will have at least five years' experience in accounting at a senior level and managing information technology functions. He or she will have proven experience of supervising and motivating staff and a detailed knowledge of fundraising or marketing databases and financial systems. Excellent 'people skills' and the ability to work effectively as a member of a senior team are essential. The salary will be £35,670.

Staff Counsellor (half time) in the University Counselling Service

The University Counselling Service is looking for an experienced and accredited Counsellor to set up and offer a counselling service for academic and administrative staff of the University. Although based within the Student Counselling Service, the staff provision will be a distinct unit.

The successful candidate should have counselling experience of both work-related and personal mental health issues and preferably have experience of working with staff in a university or other large employer. He or she should be confident in handling complex and sometimes contradictory boundary issues and working with a wide range of University bodies within a large and complex organization. The successful candidate will need to be able to work on his or her own initiative, though there will be support from both the University Counselling Service and the Personnel Division.

The salary will be on a scale equivalent to the Counsellor, Grade I, scale, currently £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095, pro rata (award pending), with the starting salary dependent upon age and experience. The post will involve some evening work and is for two years in the first instance, starting on 1 September 2000; future funding will depend on a review of the service towards the end of the initial two-year period.

Computer Associate in the Faculty of Law

Computer Associate in the Faculty of Law, to assist the Computer Officer as part of the computing team. The appointment will be for one year in the first instance, on the scale £16,286 to £18,915, depending on age and experience. The ability to make a substantial contribution to network administration and user support is essential.

Posts in the Department of Engineering

Research Associates or Research Assistants in Communications Engineering. Three positions exist in the Laboratory for Communications Engineering, to take up appointment as soon as possible:

(i) Two Research Assistants or Research Associates are required to work in the area of communication systems and networks. The persons appointed will be expected to undertake systems and applications research in the area of communication pathways between individuals and machines. Any research topic within the range of projects described at http://www-lce.eng.cam.ac.uk/ will be considered. The funding for the posts is being provided by AT&T Laboratories Cambridge, with whom a close working relationship has been established. (ii) A vacancy exists for a Research Associate to work with a team developing a component-based multimedia software framework. Candidates should hold a doctoral degree or be close to completing one. Research Associates in Speech Recognition Research. Applications are invited for Research Associates to work on an EU-funded project on improving core speech recognition technology. The aim of the project is to develop generic speech recognition technology to address a variety of problems. These include designing speech recognition systems that work well for a wide range of tasks with no task specific data, developing new methods for rapidly porting systems to new domains and languages, and schemes for extracting additional information for enriched speech transcription. There are excellent opportunities for travel and conference visits. Candidates should have a good first degree in a relevant discipline and preferably have a higher degree. Where appropriate, there is the opportunity for a candidate to combine this position with working for a Ph.D. Degree. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one of more of the following: speech recognition, machine learning, C programming, and UNIX. The project will use the HTK Large Vocabulary Speech Recognition System and hence, familiarity with the HTK Toolkit is also a distinct advantage. The project has a three-year duration and the position is immediately available. Appointments will be made at points on the Research Associate scale, depending on age and experience.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Japanese Studies

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Japanese Studies, funded by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation. The Fellowship will be held in the newly-created East Asia Institute in the University and will include teaching duties. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. Degree and demonstrable reading ability in his or her discipline of Japanese Studies. Preference will be given to candidates with research and teaching interests in the social sciences, in particular the sociology or anthropology of Japan.

This post, which will begin on 1 January 2001, is for one year in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The stipend will be on an age-related scale, starting at £16,286.
