University of Oxford

PROFESSORSHIP OF MICROBIOLOGY

The electors intend to proceed to an election to the newly-established Professorship of Microbiology, with effect from 1 October 2000 or such later date as may be arranged. The Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, where the new Professorship will be held, has a distinguished record in experimental pathology. Professor Herman Waldmann, Head of Department since 1994, has initiated a major expansion of research. At present the Department is exceptionally strong in immunology and molecular biology. A new E. P. Abraham Building will allow the Department to extend its research into areas such as infectious diseases, cancer, and cardiovascular biology. The Department has a tradition in basic aspects of host-pathogen interactions. The University aims to recruit a senior outstanding research leader, not necessarily medically qualified, in any relevant branch of the subject. A non-stipendiary Fellowship at Wadham College is attached to the Professorship.

FIXED-TERM PROFESSORSHIP OF NANOMATERIALS

The electors intend to proceed to an election to a five-year fixed-term Professorship of Nanomaterials, to replace Professor B. Cantor during his period of office as Head of the new Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. The appointment is with effect from 1 October 2000 or such later date as may be arranged.

The new Chair will lead an expansion of the Department's activities into the exciting new field of nanomaterials. The person appointed will conduct high-level research within the field of nanomaterials and contribute to the Department's teaching and administration as appropriate. Applications from across the broad field of nanomaterials are welcome, but particularly attractive areas include self-assembling nanomaterials, nano-biomaterials, nanoporous materials, carbon nanotubes and fullerenes, nanoparticulate and nanocrystalline materials, and nanofabricated electronic materials and devices. A non-stipendiary Fellowship at St Anne's College is attached to the Professorship.

Applications (eleven copies, or one only from overseas candidates), naming three persons who have agreed to act as referees on this occasion, should be received not later than 10 July 2000 by the Registrar, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JD, from whom further particulars may be obtained. Further particulars may also be accessed on the Web (URL:http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/fp/).
