University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Department of Engineering

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Production Technology. This new post has been established as part of a significant expansion of the activities of the Institute for Manufacturing within the Manufacturing and Management Division. The person appointed will be expected to make a major contribution to the development of education and research in production process technology and to extend the Institute's strong links with industry. Applicants should have a broad background in engineering, materials science, or a related discipline, preferably with some industrial experience, and have a proven record of innovative research in manufacturing technology. Areas of interest might include conventional and unconventional machining, forming or joining processes, surface engineering, and micro-scale fabrication, as well as the application of emerging materials. There will be opportunities for consultancy work with industry through the Institute's Industry Links Unit.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Ubiquitous Computer Systems (The ARM Lectureship). This new post has been established in the Laboratory for Communications Engineering. The person appointed will be expected to undertake research in areas ranging from the design and manufacture of novel-end points to the architectures of computers and the communication systems for supporting them. Preference will be given to applicants with a record of excellence in research in the field and an ability and enthusiasm for teaching.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Communications Engineering. Working in the Laboratory for Communications Engineering, the person appointed will be expected to undertake systems and applications research in the area of communication pathways between individuals and machines. Preference will be given to applicants with a record of excellence in research in the field and an ability and enthusiasm for teaching.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Zoology

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Cell Biology in the Department of Zoology, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The Department has an international reputation in Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Developmental Biology, Evolutionary Biology, and Ecology. It now seeks to extend and strengthen its vigorous programme of research and teaching in Cell Biology. The prime criteria for appointment will be academic excellence, a demonstrated ability to carry out research of international stature, and a commitment to excellence in teaching.

Senior Research Officers in the Department of Applied Economics

Two Senior Research Officers with a proven record of research in (Post 1) Industrial Organization, including network industries and/or network economics, and (Post 2) Applied Economics/Finance; one Senior Research Officer (Post 3) with a proven record of teaching and research in Theoretical or Applied Econometrics.

These are senior posts requiring research leadership and proven teaching skills. The successful candidates for Posts 1 and 2 will devote all their time to developing significant research programmes in their specialities in the Department of Applied Economics. The successful candidate for Post 3 will devote one-third of his or her time to teaching and examining duties for the Faculty of Economics.

All appointments will be for three years from 1 October 2000 in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Senior Research Officer is £19,869 a year, rising by ten annual increments to £30,065.

Residents in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine

Three vacancies for Residents in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, available from 1 October 2000. These posts provide an outstanding opportunity to study for a postgraduate qualification and the successful candidates will be required to register for a certificate or diploma in the appropriate field. Residents are involved in clinical teaching and are encouraged to develop a clinically-related research project. Residents are expected to participate in the emergency out-of-hours rota. Candidates must be Members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons or hold a veterinary degree qualifying them for membership. The Department will appoint in three fields:

Small Animal Surgery. This will provide training in both soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery and experience in emergency-critical care, under the supervision of Dr R. A. S. White and Ms S. Small Animal Medicine. This will provide training in all aspects of small animal medicine, including oncology and clinical pathology. The training programme has been approved by the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the Department is an Approved Centre for the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Medicine. Temporary Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of History

Applications are invited for a temporary teaching post in the Faculty of History in the field of British and European economic, social, and cultural history since the late nineteenth century. The appointment will be made from 1 October 2000 (or as soon as possible thereafter) for a fixed term of one year, within the salary range £17,238 to £22,579 a year.

Temporary Administrative Officer in the University Offices (General Board Division)/School of the Biological Sciences

Applications are invited for a temporary appointment at Administrative Officer, Grade II, level, to provide cover during absence on maternity leave. The duties to be undertaken include acting as Secretary of the Faculty Board of Biology and the committees of the Board. The Faculty Board's teaching programme for medical and veterinary students has been revised substantially with effect from October 2000, and an important aspect of the work will be to monitor the arrangements being put in place for the teaching programme. The person appointed will also have the opportunity to take part in financial and resource planning for the Council of the School. Applicants should have a high level of computer skills.

The officer's maternity leave will start on 9 June 2000, and if possible, an appointment will be made to provide some overlap before this date. The end of the appointment is expected to be in November 2000. The scale of stipends is £18,915 a year, rising by six increments to £24,479.

Post in the University Offices (Personnel Division)

The University is seeking to make a temporary unestablished appointment to take forward the development of a project in the area of staff development. The person appointed will be required to undertake a scoping study of IT-mediated training programmes, with a particular emphasis on academic practice, including learning and teaching, and to formulate proposals for a new programme in the University.

In order to carry out this project the person appointed will need to have competence in initiating lines of enquiry, and in selecting and synthesising relevant information from a variety of sources; good interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; and an ability to use a range of IT applications. Previous experience of project work is essential, preferably within Higher Education.

The appointment will be for nine months and the annual full-time salary will be within the range £20,811 - £32,095, depending on age.

Director and Federation Lecturer in the Henry Martyn Centre

The Henry Martyn Trust and the Cambridge Theological Federation invite applications for the joint post of Director of the Henry Martyn Centre, for the study of mission and world Christianity, and Henry Martyn Lecturer in Mission Studies in the Cambridge Theological Foundation (and Affiliated Lecturer in the University). This vacancy occurs following the appointment of the Founding Director, Canon Graham Kings, to a new post. The person appointed will be committed to the mission statements of both the Trust and the Federation, and will (i) direct the Henry Martyn Centre (http://www.martynmission.cam.ac.uk/) as a focus for the study of mission and world Christianity in Cambridge; and (ii) lecture in Mission Studies in the Cambridge Theological Federation, thereby expanding horizons in training and scholarship and raising vocations to missionary ministry. A doctorate (related to the subject of Mission Studies or world Christianity) and publications are desirable, together with experience of teaching in the context of ordination training and of mission in the context of the world-wide church.

The appointment is initially for five years (renewable) and the salary is according to the theological educator's scale of the Church of England, plus a responsibility allowance and accommodation.
