University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Sociology of Marriage, Family, and Sexualities. The successful candidate will be expected to offer teaching for the Social and Political Sciences Tripos and to base his or her research in the Centre for Family Research. He or she will have postgraduate qualifications in sociology or a related social science, with a strong interest in research and teaching in the family, marriage, and gender roles. It is hoped that the successful candidate would take up the post on or before 1 September 2000

Computer Officer, Grade II or Grade III, in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Computer Officer, Grade II or Grade III, in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, to provide general UNIX support for the research community in the Department. Work will include commissioning new equipment, troubleshooting hardware and software faults, and advising and assisting staff and research students. Applicants should have several years' experience of UNIX system management and TCP/IP networking in a scientific or engineering environment. The ability to communicate with users at all levels of computing knowledge is essential.

The appointment will be for up to three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade III, is £18,915 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,479. The starting salary will depend on age and experience. A well-qualified applicant may be appointed on the Computer Officer, Grade II, scale (£23,521, rising by four annual increments to £27,451).

Senior Technical Officer (Electronics and Instrumentation) in the Department of Chemical Engineering

Senior Technical Officer in the Department of Chemical Engineering, to take up appointment as soon as possible. A well-qualified Electronics Engineer is required to manage a small talented team responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of advanced instrumentation and other electrical equipment for the Department's research and teaching. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the research of the Department by designing and constructing new and novel instruments and systems for the acquisition and processing of experimental measurements. Familiarity with interfacing electronic equipment to computer data acquisition systems is essential. The post also carries responsibility for the management of the Department's advanced instrumentation, including the development of appropriate maintenance strategies. The applicant will be expected to develop and implement safety policies and procedures relating to electronics and electrical safety. Applicants should have a strong background in electronics, with appropriate qualifications to at least degree level.

The appointment will be for five years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time, or, where appropriate, to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Senior Technical Officer is £20,811 a year, rising by ten annual increments to £30,065.

Senior Advisory Officer in the University Offices (Estate Management and Building Service)

Senior Advisory Officer (Estates Surveyor) in the Estate Management and Building Service, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The successful applicant will head the property management team, which manages the University's non-operational property. Applicants should be qualified general practice surveyors with excellent commercial skills and the ability to take an analytical and strategic view.

The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a Senior Advisory Officer is £28,478 a year, rising by three annual increments to £32,095. The closing date for applications is 20 April 2000.

Administrative Officers in the University Offices (General Board Division)

Administrative Officer, Grade I or Grade II, assigned to the Faculty of History, to take up appointment as soon as possible. The duties of the post are the provision of administrative support to the Faculty of History.

Administrative Officer, Grade II, assigned to the Faculty of Oriental Studies, to take up appointment from 1 July 2000. The duties of the post are the provision of administrative support to the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

In each case, candidates should be educated to degree level, or equivalent, and have relevant administrative experience, including the management of staff and resources, preferably in a University or similar institution. The initial period of appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time. An Administrative Officer who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

Administrative Officer, Grade I: £22,579 a year, rising by five annual increments to £27,451.

Administrative Officer, Grade II: £18,915 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,479.

OTHER POSTS

Computer Associate, Grade III, in the Department of Engineering

Applications are invited for a Computer Associate to join the Institute for Manufacturing, a Division of the Engineering Department, and to be responsible for its computing infrastructure. There are about 100 staff and postgraduate research students in the Institute and it is projected to grow to about 170 by 2005. Substantial investment has been made on site to create a state of the art facility for the simulation, control, and integration of automation systems and for multimedia and videoconferencing applications. The new equipment has been integrated with an established network of over 100 computers, mainly desk top PCs running Windows NT and portable PCs, but also Macintosh and UNIX machines. A computer technician works in the Institute dealing with day to day maintenance and administration issues and reports to the post-holder. The person appointed will be a member of the Department's Computer Systems Group and will be expected to provide the appropriate technical vision as well as managing the Institute's network and systems to ensure their high availability. Proven technical ability, supported by a good degree, or equivalent qualification, and relevant experience are required.

The initial appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment. The salary range is £18,915 to £24,479, and there may be the opportunity for the appointee to supplement this through the Institute's collaborative work with industry.

Research Assistant in the Department of Land Economy (Property Research Unit)

A Research Assistant is required, for fifteen months in the first instance, to work on an important new project on 'Land use planning and the production of affordable housing', which is jointly funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Housing Corporation, and the Countryside Agency. The starting date is 1 June 2000, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Candidates should have a good degree in a relevant subject or postgraduate research experience. Some knowledge of land use planning and housing issues would be an advantage, as would experience of data analysis, interviewing, and report writing. The salary will be in the range £16,286-£18,185 a year.
