Graces submitted to the Regent House on 1 March 2000

The Council submit the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, other than any which is withdrawn or for which a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 113), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 10 March 2000.

1. That, on the recommendation of the Select Preachers Syndicate, Regulation 1 for the Syndicate be amended so that the Proctors are substituted for the Pro-Proctors as ex officio members.1

2. That the Bayer Professorship of Neurosurgery (1990) be retitled the Professorship of Neurosurgery from 1 August 2000.2

3. That the recommendations contained in paragraph 7 of the Joint Report, dated 31/12 January 2000, of the Council and the General Board on amendments to certain regulations consequential to the creation of a Personnel Division within the University Offices (Reporter, p. 413) be approved.3

4. That, on the recommendation of the Library Syndicate, the Librarian be allowed to lend the Leconfield manuscript of Donne's poems (Add. 8467) to the Wordsworth Trust, Dove Cottage, Grasmere, Cumbria, for an exhibition 'English Poetry: the first thousand years' to be held in Dove Cottage, Grasmere, Cumbria, from 1 June until 31 October 2000.

1 Statutes and Ordinances, p. 138. The present membership of the Syndicate was revised in 1936, to include the Pro-Proctors in place of the Proctors (Reporter, 1935-36, p. 672). At that time Select Preachers were nominated one year in advance, and it was therefore the Pro-Proctors (as Proctors the following year) who attended the Sermons. This pattern of appointment no longer applies and the Syndicate consider that it would now be more appropriate for the Proctors again to be members ex officio.

2 Statutes and Ordinances, p. 631. Following the termination of the Bayer award from 31 July 2000 the Bayer Professorship of Neurosurgery (1990) will be funded from 1 August 2000 from the NHS Regional Academic Posts Budget. It is proposed, therefore, to retitle the Professorship.

3 See the Council's Notice on p. 484.
