WILDE PROFESSORSHIP OF MENTAL PHILOSOPHY

The electors intend to proceed to an election to the Wilde Professorship of Mental Philosophy, with effect from 1 October 2000 or such later date as may be arranged.

For purposes of this post, the term 'mental philosophy' is taken to mean the philosophy of mind and the computational, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science approaches to the structure of the mind; one of the important roles of the Professor is seen as bridging theoretical and empirical studies of the mind. A non-stipendiary Fellowship at Corpus Christi College is attached to the Professorship. The closing date is 8 March 2000.

PROFESSORSHIP OF EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS

The electors intend to proceed to an election to the Professorship of Experimental Physics, which falls vacant with effect from 1 October 2000 upon the retirement of Professor P. G. H. Sandars. The new Professor will be expected to lead an independent research programme in Atomic or Laser Physics and to take a leading role in the teaching and administration of the Sub-department of Atomic and Laser Physics. A non-stipendiary Fellowship at St Hugh's College is attached to the Professorship. The closing date is 17 April 2000.

In each case, applications (ten copies, or one only from overseas candidates), naming three persons who have agreed to act as referees on this occasion, should be received by the Registrar, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JD, from whom further particulars may be obtained. Further particulars may also be accessed on the Web (URL: http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/fp/).

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN THE FACULTY OF ORIENTAL STUDIES

The Research Fellowship will be of interest to postdoctoral scholars in Middle or Near Eastern Studies, Hebrew and Jewish Studies (including Rabbinical Hebrew), Arabic, Persian, or Islamic Art, and Archaeology. Only one Research Fellowship will be awarded, on a competitive basis, to the best candidate from these fields. The Fellowship is intended to enable a postdoctoral scholar to continue his or her research and, if appropriate, to prepare his or her dissertation for publication. Applicants should have completed, or expect shortly to complete, a doctorate.

The appointment will be tenable for three years, without possibility of renewal. The appointment will be on the RS1A (postdoctoral) scale and will attract a salary in the range £16,286 to £18,915 a year.

The further particulars of the post (which must be consulted before applying) are available from the Secretary to the Oriental Studies Board, Pusey Lane, Oxford, OX1 2LE (e-mail jane.webber@orinst.ox.ac.uk), to whom applications (three hard copies), together with the testimonials of three academic referees, should be sent by Tuesday, 25 April 2000.
