Report of the Council on the construction of an extension and alterations to the Hoyle Building at the Institute of Astronomy

The COUNCIL beg leave to report to the University as follows:

1. The Director of the Institute of Astronomy has brought forward proposals for the provision of additional office accommodation in the Hoyle Building at the Institute. The successful funding of substantial long-term research grants and the move away from Cambridge of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, which, in turn, has led to the Institute accruing new long-term staff with their own research activities plus library stock, have combined to create an acute shortage of office space. It is therefore proposed to construct a two-storey extension to the Hoyle Building which, together with internal alterations, will provide additional office space to accommodate up to thirty people. The extension and alterations along with minor modifications to the Institute's Observatory Building to accommodate additional library material will enable the Institute to vacate space it is currently occupying in Greenwich House (the ex-Royal Greenwich Observatory Building).

2. A scheme has been prepared by Annand and Mustoe Architects; the gross floor area of the extension is 575 sq.m. with alterations to an area of 217 sq.m. The estimated cost of the full scheme is £1.942m including fees and VAT, assuming that building work commences on site in August 2000. Full funding is available including contributions from PPARC (in relation to the RGO move), Trinity College, Institute funds including income and accumulated capital from trust funds, and Chest maintenance funds.

3. Drawings of the proposed scheme are displayed for the information of the University in the Schools Arcade.

4. The Council recommend:

I. That the Director of Estate Management be authorized to apply for planning consent for the extension and alterations to the Institute of Astronomy as proposed in this Report.

II. That the Treasurer be authorized in due course to accept a tender for the works within the funds identified.
