MERCK SHARP AND DOHME STUDENTSHIPS AND FELLOWSHIPS IN NEUROSCIENCE AND RELATED CHEMISTRY

The Managers of the Merck Sharp and Dohme Educational Sponsorship Programme invite applications for a number of awards in areas of neuroscience and chemistry which are relevant to the pharma-ceutical industry, tenable from 1 October 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applicants will be required to undertake original research into any problems which may have a bearing on neuroscience and related chemistry. The awards are available at postgraduate level leading to a Ph.D. Degree (successful applicants must be accepted for registration at the University of Cambridge before starting their award), or at postdoctoral level where the successful applicant will be expected to hold a Ph.D. Degree by the time they take up the award. Recipients of the award shall be designated as either 'MSD Students' or 'MSD Fellows'. All award holders shall participate in an annual symposium held in conjunction with staff from Merck Sharp and Dohme, and travel costs for this will be provided. In addition, consumables funding is provided for both Studentships and Fellowships.

Tenure will be for three years for Studentships (maintenance payable at MRC-equivalent rates), and for Fellowships tenure will normally be for one year. Stipends for Fellowships are in the range £16,236 to £24,479. (The stipend is age-related; £18,915 at age twenty-eight years)

Application forms and further information are available from the Secretary of the Managers, Merck Sharp and Dohme Educational Sponsorship Programme, Clinical School, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Hills Road, Cambridge, CB2 2SP (tel. 01223 336734, e-mail cls36@medschl.cam.ac.uk), to whom applications (six copies) should be sent so as to reach her not later than 25 February 2000.
