Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in the Department of Chemical Engineering

Two University Lecturers or University Assistant Lecturers in Chemical Engineering, one to take up appointment as soon as possible, and the other from 1 September 2000. The appointments will fall within the broad range of areas constituting modern chemical engineering; applications will be considered from graduates in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering, or associated branches of engineering or science, e.g. biochemistry, chemistry, materials science, mathematics, microbiology, or physics. A successful candidate will have, or will be expected to develop, a record of world-class research commensurate with the Department's international standing and research rating. Teaching responsibilities will include contributing to all aspects of undergraduate courses and supervising graduate students.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer (English Language) in the Faculty of English

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the field of English Language. The appointment will be effective from 1 October 2000. The successful candidate will be expected to promote the study of the English language in relation to the development of English literature. Applications will be welcomed from candidates whose qualifications and interests refer to the period since 1700, including those working in the field of Commonwealth and International literature in English.

University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Geography

University Assistant Lecturer in Physical Geography, to take up appointment from 1 October 2000. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the Department's high level of research activity, and to teach at undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. levels.

Computer Officer, Grade II or Grade III, in the University Computing Service

A post is offered in the development and support of central information systems (World Wide Web and Usenet News). Specific expertise in Web and News services (including cache technology) is needed, together with a thorough understanding of Unix, both as a user and as a system administrator. Although web authoring is not a primary requirement, some understanding of common techniques would be an advantage.

The appointment will be at either Computer Officer, Grade II, or Grade III, level, according to age and experience. The appointment will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time, or, when appropriate, to the retiring age.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

Computer Officer, Grade II: £23,521 a year, rising by four annual increments to £27,451.

Computer Officer, Grade III: £18,915 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,479.

Two posts in the University Library

Temporary Assistant Library Officer/Assistant Under-Librarian

Applications are invited for a temporary post in the Reference Department of the University Library, to be filled either at Assistant Library Officer or Assistant Under-Librarian level, depending on the experience of the successful candidate. Applicants should have a good honours degree and a postgraduate qualification in library and information studies, together with experience in an academic library. Experience of automated library systems is essential. The salary will be in the range £16,286-£19,869 a year (Assistant Library Officer) or £18,915-£24,479 a year (Assistant Under-Librarian). The appointment will be until 31 July 2002 when the external funding for the post expires. The possibility of continuation beyond that date is conditional upon the availability of further funding. The closing date for applications is Friday, 4 February 2000.

Associate Editor

The Darwin Correspondence Project seeks an Associate Editor to work with a small team, based in the University Library, on the publication of The Correspondence of Charles Darwin. The candidate should hold a Ph.D. Degree in history of science or history, with an interest in nineteenth-century science; editorial ability and computer literacy is required, and a knowledge of French and/or German is desirable. The appointment is for one year in the first instance, with reappointment for a further period or periods being dependent on the continuation of external funding. The salary is based on the University academic-related Research Associate scale (£16,286-£24,479 a year). The closing date for applications is Monday, 28 February 2000.

Secretary in the Cambridge Society

The Cambridge Society was set up by the University in 1976. It is a world-wide membership organization for Cambridge graduates. The Society is looking for a Secretary to succeed Mr Bill Kirkman. The Secretary is responsible for running the Society in accordance with the policy decided by the Executive Committee. The post is part-time. The Secretary works in close collaboration with the Administrator, who holds a full-time post. The Secretary receives a non-pensionable honorarium, currently under review. The Society's purpose is 'to support the University in maintaining and extending excellence in learning, teaching, and research'. It is not a fund-raising organization.
