WILDE PROFESSORSHIP OF MENTAL PHILOSOPHY

The electors intend to proceed to an election to the Wilde Professorship of Mental Philosophy, with effect from 1 October 2000 or such later date as may be arranged.

For purposes of this post, the term 'mental philosophy' is taken to mean the philosophy of mind and the computational, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science approaches to the structure of the mind; one of the important roles of the Professor is seen as bridging theoretical and empirical studies of the mind. A non-stipendiary Fellowship at Corpus Christi College is attached to the Professorship.

Applications (ten copies, or one only from overseas candidates), naming three persons who have agreed to act as referees on this occasion, should be received not later than 14 February 2000, by the Registrar, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JD, from whom further particulars may be obtained. Further particulars may also be accessed on the Web (URL: http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/fp/).

SPEAKER'S LECTURERSHIP IN BIBLICAL STUDIES

The electors propose to appoint a Lecturer to hold office for one year, from 1 October 2001. The Lecturer is required to deliver no fewer than six lectures in the year of his or her Lecturership, on a subject concerned with Biblical Studies. The stipend is the net income of the fund, which will be about £2,700.

Eight copies of applications, which should include a statement of the subject of the lectures proposed, should be sent to Mrs E. A. Macallister, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JD, from whom further details may be obtained. The closing date for receipt of applications is 1 February 2000.

VARLEY-GRADWELL TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP IN INSECT ECOLOGY

Applications are invited for the Varley-Gradwell Travelling Fellowship in Insect Ecology. The Fellowship, which may be up to £2,000 in value, will support fieldwork, travel, and other activity of direct benefit to the field of Insect Ecology. The Fellowship will be tenable for one year, commencing on a date to be agreed. It will not be renewable.

Applications, including a curriculum vitae and a research proposal, should be sent to Mrs Judith Brown, Board of Management for the Varley-Gradwell Travelling Fellowship in Insect Ecology, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JD (tel. 01865 270213, e-mail Judith.Brown@admin.ox.ac.uk), by 29 February 2000. The research proposal should include a budget and should not exceed two sides of A4 in length. Applicants are asked to note that, if large numbers of specimens would result from the work, the cost of follow-up work should be shown in the budget, and details of how and by whom they would be identified.

Applicants should arrange for two referees to write in confidence to Mrs Brown by the closing date. In the case of graduate students, one of the referees should be the supervisor.

The University is an equal opportunities employer.
