University Lecturers and University Assistant Lecturers

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

University Lecturers in the Department of Genetics

Three University Lecturers in the Department of Genetics, to take up appointment from 1 October 2000. Applications are encouraged from scientists able to provide dynamic leadership and having a strong research record. They should have active research programmes that will complement existing research activities of the Department in the study of cell function or the regulation of development and cell proliferation at the cellular level. Applicants using the yeasts or the mouse as model systems would suitably expand the research expertise of the Department. However, applications will also be welcomed from scientists working on other models such as C.elegans, Xenopus, and Arabidopsis. The appointees will benefit from the recent award to the Department of a JIF grant to strengthen research activities in Cell Biology. They will be expected to play a full role in the teaching and research activities of the Department, including both the training of postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and undergraduate teaching in the Faculty of Biology.

University Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics

University Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics, School of Clinical Medicine. The research interests of the Department are in endocrinology and diabetes, with an emphasis on the molecular mechanisms of hormone action and how genetic variations may influence early human growth and development and the later onset of disease. These programmes of research are directed by Professors Ieuan Hughes and David Dunger. Strong links have been established with the research groups of Professors John Todd, Krishna Chatterjee, and Steve O'Rahilly in the School's Cambridge Institute for Medical Research. While the successful applicant should have interests which resonate with these activities, it is expected that the Lecturer will pursue and develop an independently-funded research programme. The post is available immediately and for five years in the first instance.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer (Linguistics and Philology) in the Faculty of Classics

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Classics (Linguistics and Philology), to take up appointment on 1 October 2000. Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates. The Linguistics and Philology section of the Faculty is responsible for teaching descriptive linguistics of Greek and Latin for Part I of the Classical Tripos, and the historical linguistics of the two languages and comparative linguistics of the Indo-European languages for Part II, as well as for supervising graduate students working in these fields. The successful candidate will be required to take a full part in these activities and to engage in research relevant to the teaching programme.

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in Historical Linguistics, to take up appointment on 1 April 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. As well as teaching Historical Linguistics, including relevant aspects of synchronic language variation, the successful candidate will be expected to teach in one or more of the following areas of linguistic theory: Phonology, Morphology, Syntax. He or she will be expected to show outstanding achievement and potential in research and publication in the field.

Assistant Under-Librarian and Assistant Library Officer in the University Library

Two posts in the Cataloguing Department of the University Library: an Assistant Under-Librarian (Romance Languages Specialist) and an Assistant Library Officer (Germanic Languages Specialist). Applicants should have a good honours degree, appropriate language skills, and a postgraduate qualification in library and information studies, together with experience in an academic library. The appointments will be for three years for an Assistant Under-Librarian, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age, or for five years for an Assistant Library Officer, with the possibility of reappointment for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

The pensionable scales of stipends are:

Assistant Under-Librarian: £18,915 a year, rising by six annual increments to £24,479.

Assistant Library Officer: £16,286 a year, rising by four annual increments to £19,869.

Assistant Keeper (Coins and Medals) in the Fitzwilliam Museum

Assistant Keeper in the Department of Coins and Medals, to be especially concerned with Ancient Greek, Celtic, Roman, and/or Oriental coins. The post-holder will assist in general curatorial duties, improving documentation, assisting visitors, mounting exhibitions, and teaching numismatics. Appointment will be from 1 May 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Appointments made at Assistant Keeper level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure for an Assistant Keeper is five years, but all holders of the office are considered for possible appointment to the office of Senior Assistant Keeper during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Assistant Keeper is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

Administrative Officer, Grade I, in the University Offices (Estate Management and Building Service)

Administrative Officer, Grade I (Management Accountant), to take up appointment on 7 March 2000, or as soon as possible thereafter. He or she will be expected to develop the management accounting function, including the preparation of option appraisals for new capital projects. Applicants should be qualified or newly-qualified accountants, or equivalent, with proven IT skills. They should be pro-active and be able to communicate well.

The appointment will be for three years. An Administrative Officer who has reached the maximum of the scale of stipends may be reappointed to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for an Administrative Officer, Grade I, is £22,579 a year, rising by five annual increments to £27,451.

Pharmacia and Upjohn Research Fellowship in the Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Structure

Applications for a Pharmacia and Upjohn Research Fellowship in Chinese Predictive Demography are invited from experienced research demographers who are skilled in the use of micro-simulation techniques as applied to demographic issues. Applicants should also have a track record of publications in contemporary and future Chinese demographic issues based upon the use of simulation procedures. They should also possess linguistic skills enabling them to speak and read Chinese. Applicants will be expected to test and develop a set of simulation systems with a view to modelling future aspects of Chinese population structures that will influence morbidity and disease patterns in the twenty-first century. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop a collaborative network of researchers with interests in the above matters in Europe, North America, and East Asia, and will take the lead responsibility for assembling and assessing relevant data sets.

The appointment will be for five years in the first instance and the stipend will be according to age and experience on the scale £20,811 to £30,065. Applications should be made by 28 January 2000.

RSLP Project Officer in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science Whipple Library

Applications are invited for the post of Project Officer for HOST (the history of science and technology, 1801-1914: a collaborative retrospective conversion and conservation programme) in the Whipple Library. The post-holder will have delegated responsibility for the cataloguing of the Library's nineteenth-century collections, and will assist in selecting items for conservation.

We are seeking a professionally-qualified librarian with experience in an academic library. Knowledge of AACR2, UKMARC, and LCSH is essential, as is previous experience of automated library systems. The appointment will be for eight months on the Research Assistant scale (£16,286-£18,185 a year pro rata).

Postdoctoral Research Associateships in the School of Clinical Medicine

Applications are invited for two Pinsent-Darwin Postdoctoral Research Associateships in Mental Pathology, tenable from a date to be agreed from April 2000. Applicants will be required to undertake original research into any problem which may have a bearing on mental defects, diseases, or disorders. Candidates are expected to have been awarded a Ph.D. Degree by the time they take up the award.

Tenure will be for two years in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal for up to two further years. The age-related stipend will be in the range £16,286 to £24,479 (£18,915 at the age of twenty-eight years).

Research Assistant in the Computer Laboratory

A temporary Research Assistant is required for six months to provide general support for ongoing work within the AutoHAN and HANLan projects (see http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/SRG/HAN/). The start date is flexible but it is hoped that the post-holder would be able to start by July 2000. The applicant must have some hardware construction experience and be fluent in C and assembly language programming (ARM or Intel). Knowledge of Verilog and FPGAs would be an advantage. The salary will be on the Research Assistant scale (£16,286-£18,185 a year).
