UNIVERSITY OFFICES

Applications are invited for the following University offices:

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Philosophy

University Lecturer or University Assistant Lecturer in the Faculty of Philosophy, to take up appointment on 1 October 2000. The person appointed may have research interests in any area of Philosophy. An ability to teach in at least one of the following areas may be an advantage: Political Philosophy, History of Modern Philosophy, Aesthetics, Twentieth-century Continental Philosophy.

Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.

Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant Lectureship is five years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

Computer Officer, Grade I, (Database Administrator and Application Developer) in the Computing Service

An experienced person is required to plan and implement further development of the Computing Service's user and sales databases to exploit the potential for authentication and other benefits arising from the introduction of smart cards and a new University-wide directory of staff and students. This post requires experience as a Database Administrator and Application Developer, together with the ability to investigate and plan developments in co-operation with the University administration.

Oracle experience, preferably on a Solaris or NT platform, is desirable, although experience with another relational database will be considered. Some evidence of an ability to design and progress projects is also desirable. Appointment and reappointments will be for periods not exceeding five years at a time.

The pensionable scale of stipends for a Computer Officer, Grade I, is £19,869 a year, rising by twelve annual increments to £32,095 a year. The starting salary will depend on age and experience.

Lecturers and assistant lecturers in Modern Chinese Studies in the Faculty of Oriental Studies

Following its successful bid under the HEFCE scheme for the expansion of Chinese Studies, the Faculty of Oriental Studies invites applications from qualified candidates for lectureships or assistant lectureships in the following fields as they are applied to China: Commercial Law; Economics and Management; Human Geography; Political Science.

The persons appointed will be expected to contribute actively to the development of Chinese Studies and, particularly, to teach in the area of their expertise. They should be prepared to use primary material in Chinese. A new M.Phil. course is expected to start on 1 October 2000.

Appointments will be for two years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment for a further three years. The pensionable scale of stipends for a lecturer will be £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095. The pensionable scale of stipends for an assistant lecturer will be £17,238 a year, rising by six annual increments to £22,579.

Tax Officer in the Finance Division of the University Offices

Applications are invited for the position of Tax Officer within the Finance Division. This is a new post which will support the University's Tax Manager in the effective management of the University's tax affairs. Responsibilities will include: supervising and checking the preparation of the University's VAT return; preparing detailed reports and calculations to both protect existing VAT savings and quantify new opportunities; and liaising with Departments and conducting research into their activities with a view to minimizing the impact of direct and indirect taxes on their income and expenditure. The role includes supervision of a VAT clerk responsible for compiling financial and statistical returns.

The post-holder will be required to have some knowledge of VAT or direct taxes, but an ability to quickly assimilate and interpret both legislation and detailed financial reports is more important. The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level, with a willingness to undertake the ATT qualification, or will be presently qualified to ATT level, or will have substantial relevant experience.

Funds are available for this post for three years in the first instance, to be paid on the pensionable scale £18,915 to £24,479 (equivalent to an Administrative Officer, Grade II).

Research Associate or Senior Research Associate in the Department of Engineering

A position exists for a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate to work on engineering knowledge capture, sharing, and reuse in the aerospace design process. The project is funded by the EPSRC under their IMI Programme and will involve collaboration with Rolls-Royce, British Aerospace, Sheffield University, and Southampton University. The aim of the project is to develop an integrated theory of knowledge representation, in collaboration with complementary research undertaken by the other partners. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. Degree in engineering, knowledge management, or a related field. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in engineering design and knowledge-based system development. The appointment will be for three years, starting 1 April 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary is in the range £16,286 to £22,579 a year.
