Smuts Librarian for South Asian and Commonwealth Studies in the University Library and Centre for South Asian Studies

Applicants should have a good honours degree, preferably in Modern History or Commonwealth Studies, and a postgraduate qualification in library and information studies, together with several years of experience in an academic library. The post-holder will report to the University Librarian, but the post will be shared 50/50 between the University Library and the Centre for South Asian Studies and will include responsibility for the Centre's Library and for the Royal Commonwealth Society collections in the University Library.

The salary is in the range £18,915 to £24,479 a year (Assistant Under-Librarian). The appointment will be for three years in the first instance.

Departmental Administrator (Academic Matters) in the Department of Physics

Applications are invited for the new post of Departmental Administrator (Academic Matters) in the Department of Physics, to take up appointment on 1 March 2000 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post-holder, who will be responsible to the Head of the Department, will have responsibility in all aspects of the academic administration of the Department, including financial planning and budgetary control, research grant administration, and personnel matters concerning academic, academic-related, and research staff. In these and other areas it will be necessary to maintain effective and responsive communications with the University's central administration, the Faculty Board of Physics and Chemistry, the School of the Physical Sciences, HEFCE, and the Research Councils. The post-holder will work closely with the Departmental Secretary (Administration) and the Finance Officer on all aspects of resource allocation and in making recommendations to the Head of the Department.

Appointment to the post will be for three years, with the possibility of reappointment, subject to a review of the post and satisfactory performance of the post-holder. The stipend will be equivalent to that of a Departmental Secretary, Grade A (£22,579-£33,593 a year), according to age and experience.

Postdoctoral Confocal Microscopist/Electrophysiologist in the Department of Physiology

A three-year postdoctoral position, combining confocal microscope imaging and intracellular electrophysiological techniques, is available, for work on early mechanisms in excitation contraction coupling in skeletal and cardiac muscle, under a newly-awarded MRC co-operative group grant on cellular calcium homeostasis. Experience with cellular electrophysiology and/or calcium imaging in excitable tissue is strongly desirable. The salary will be in the range £16,286 to £24,479, with placement on the scale determined by age and experience.
