Oriental Studies Tripos, Parts I and II, and Preliminary Examination for Part I, 2000: Notice

The Faculty Board of Oriental Studies give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2000, the form of the examinations for the Oriental Studies Tripos, Parts I and II, and the Preliminary Examination for Part I will be changed, as follows:

Preliminary Examination for Part I

Paper Ar. 1. Arabic composition and grammar

This paper will consist of two sections. In Section A candidates will be required to compose two pieces of written Arabic of approximately 120 words each, which will each carry 30 marks. In Section B candidates will be required to answer questions on Arabic grammar. This section will carry 40 marks.

Paper Ar. 2. Arabic texts, 1

This paper will consist of four questions, and candidates will be required to answer all four. There will be two passages of Arabic on which candidates will be required to answer questions (25 marks each); one passage of Arabic for translation into English (30 marks); and one passage of Arabic to be summarized in English (20 marks).

Paper Ar. 3. Arabic texts, 2

This paper will consist of six passages of Arabic for translation into English and comment, and candidates will be required to attempt four. Each translation will carry 20 marks and each passage of commentary will carry 5 marks.

Paper Ar. 4. Middle Eastern history and culture

This paper will consist of three sections each containing three essay questions. Candidates will be required to answer one question from each section. All questions will carry equal marks.

Paper P. 1. Persian texts

This paper will contain five passages of Persian for translation into English. Three passages will consist of seen texts read during the year, and the other two will be unseen texts. Candidates will be required to attempt all five passages, and each will carry 20 marks.

Persian Oral

This will consist of three sections: (A) a passage of Persian for dictation (30 marks); (B) reading aloud (30 marks); (C) conversation in Persian (40 marks).

Part I

Chinese Studies

Paper C. 1. Literary Chinese texts, 1
Paper C. 2. Literary Chinese texts, 2

Each of these papers will consist of three translation questions, all of which must be attempted. Attached to each translation question will be an essay question. Candidates must attempt two of the attached essay questions. The translations will be worth 75 per cent and the essays worth 25 per cent of the marks.

Paper C. 3. Modern Chinese Texts, 1

This paper will consist of three questions, two worth 33 marks and one worth 34 marks. Candidates will be required to translate three unspecified passages from Chinese into English. At least two of the questions will be unseen as well as unspecified.

Hebrew Studies

Paper H. 3. Israelite and Jewish history and literature

This paper will consist of two sections. In Section A candidates will be required to answer two essay questions on Israelite history and two questions on Biblical literature. In Section B candidates will be required to answer essay questions on Modern Hebrew literature. Candidates may choose to answer either section.

Indian Studies

Paper In. 3. Hindi specified texts, 1

This paper will consist of four selected passages for translation into English, taken from texts covered during the year. There will also be questions on points of grammar, sense or style in each selection, which are to be answered in English. All questions must be attempted.

Japanese Studies

Paper J. 2. Modern Japanese texts, 1

This paper will consist of two sections. In Section A candidates will be required to translate one unseen passage from Japanese into English. In Section B candidates will be required to translate from Japanese into English two out of three passages taken from texts covered during the year. Candidates will also be required to answer in English a question on the style or content of each selected passage.

Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies

Paper Is. 1. Arabic language, 1

This paper will consist of three questions and candidates will be required to attempt all questions. There will be one passage of Arabic on which candidates will be required to answer questions (50 marks); one passage of Arabic for translation into English (30 marks); and one passage of Arabic to be summarized in English (20 marks).

Paper Is. 2. Arabic language, 2

This paper will contain three questions; one passage of pre-modern Arabic for translation into English (30 marks); one passage of English for translation into Arabic (30 marks); and one question requiring a piece of writing of about 250 words of Arabic (40 marks).

Paper Is. 5. Persian language, 1

This paper will contain two unseen passages of modern Persian prose to be translated into English, each of which will carry 25 marks. There will also be four essay questions, of which candidates must attempt two, and each one will carry 25 marks.

Paper Is. 6. Persian literary texts

This paper will contain two seen and two unseen passages of classical Persian prose for translation into English (80 marks). The paper will also contain grammatical and linguistic questions on one or more of the passages concerned (20 marks). Candidates should attempt all five questions.

Paper Is. 7. Persian literature, 1

This paper will consist of two sections. Section A will contain three seen passages of Persian poetry to be translated into English and commented upon as indicated. Each translation will carry 15 marks and each passage of commentary will carry 10 marks. Section B will contain essay questions of which candidates must attempt to answer one. This will carry 25 marks.

Paper Is. 8. Middle Eastern and Islamic history, 1

This paper will consist of three sections each containing three essay questions. Candidates will be required to answer one question from each section.

Paper Is. 10. Middle Eastern and Islamic history, 3

This paper will consist of three sections each containing three essay questions. Candidates will be required to answer one question from each section. All questions will carry equal marks.

Persian Oral

This will consist of three sections: (A) a passage of Persian for dictation (30 marks); (B) comprehension of the dictation passage (30 marks); (C) conversation in Persian (40 marks).

Part II

Indian Studies

Paper In. 16. Hindi specified texts, 2

This paper will consist of four passages for translation into English, taken from early Hindi texts covered during the year; with questions on points of grammar, content, or style from each section, and two essay questions. All questions must be attempted.

Paper In. 17. Hindi specified texts, 3

This paper will consist of four passages for translation into English, taken from modern Hindi texts covered during the year, and two essay questions. All questions must be attempted.

Paper In. 19. Hindi essay, and history of the Hindi language

This paper will consist of two sections. In Section A candidates will be required to write one essay in Hindi, on one of at least three topics. In Section B candidates will be required to translate one unseen passage from English into Hindi.

Paper In. 24 Hindi literature

This paper will consist of at least ten essay questions, of which candidates will be required to answer three.

Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies

Paper Is. 11. Arabic language, 3

This paper will consist of three questions; one passage of Arabic on which candidates will be required to answer questions (35 marks); one passage of Arabic to be summarized in English (25 marks); and one question offering a choice of at least four topics for an essay in Arabic of at least 400 words (40 marks). Candidates will be required to attempt all questions.

Paper Is. 12. Arabic language, 4

This paper will contain four passages from Arabic literature of different periods for translation into English of which candidates will be required to attempt three. All questions will carry equal marks.

Paper Is. 15. Arabic literature, 3

This paper will consist of two sections. Section A will consist of four passages (not for translation), and candidates will be required to choose two for discussion and analysis. Section B will consist of six essay questions and candidates will be required to attempt any two. All questions will carry equal marks.

Paper Is. 16. Persian language, 2

This paper will consist of three unseen passages of classical Persian for translation into English. Candidates will be required to attempt all three questions and all questions will carry equal marks.

Paper Is. 17. Persian language, 3

This paper will consist of two unseen passages of modern Persian for translation into English (30 marks each). There will also be a choice of three topics for an essay of about 400 words in Persian, and candidates must attempt one of them (40 marks).

Paper Is. 22. Middle Eastern and Islamic history, 6

This paper will consist of three sections each containing three essay questions. Candidates will be required to answer one question from each section. All questions will carry equal marks.

Persian Oral

This will consist of three sections: (A) a passage of Persian for dictation (30 marks); (B) comprehension of the dictation passage (30 marks); (C) discussion in Persian of a topic chosen from a list provided (40 marks).
