Classical Tripos, Part I and Part II, and Preliminary Examination for Part I, 2000: Notice

The Faculty Board of Classics give notice that, with effect from the examination to be held in 2000, the form of the examination for the Classical Tripos, Parts I and II, and the Preliminary Examination for Part I will be changed, as follows:

Preliminary Examination for Part I

Paper 4. Classical questions

Candidates for the Classical Tripos should attempt four questions including at least one from Section 1. Candidates for Paper N. 2 (Alternative Greek translation) in the Oriental Studies Tripos should attempt four questions from any section. Candidates will be required to write in good English.

Part I

Candidates will be required to write in good English.

Paper 8. Greek and Roman philosophy

The paper will be divided into two sections. Section A will contain twelve questions on the two set texts. Six questions will be on the Greek set text and six questions will be on the Roman set text. Section B will contain questions on ancient philosophers and philosophical systems. Candidates will be required to answer four questions, including at least one from each of Sections A and B. Within Section A candidates may, but need not, answer questions on both set texts. They may not, however, answer more than two questions on any one set text.

Part II

Candidates will be required to write in good English.

Paper A1. A prescribed Greek author or authors, and a prescribed Latin author or authors: Homer, Odyssey, and Virgil, Aeneid
Paper A2. Prescribed Greek texts: Past and present in Hellenistic poetry
Paper A3. Prescribed Latin texts: Ovid, Metamorphoses

For each of these papers candidates will be required to answer three questions, with at least one question from each of Sections A and B.

Paper A4. Greek and Latin textual criticism and transmission of texts

Candidates will be required to answer three questions, one from each section.

Paper D1. Prehellenic archaeology
Paper D2. Early Hellenic archaeology

For each of these papers candidates will be required to answer four questions.

Paper D3. Classical (Greco-Roman) art

Candidates will be required to answer four questions, including Question 1.

Paper D4. Archaeology of the Western Provinces of the Roman Empire

Candidates will be required to answer four questions.

Paper E1. Elements of comparative linguistics

Candidates will be required to answer three questions.

Paper E2. The Greek language: Greek from Mycenae to Homer
Paper E3. The Latin language: The origins and early history of the Latin language

For each of these papers candidates will be required to answer three questions, including Question 1.
