St John's College

COLLEGE LECTURESHIP IN ENGLISH LITERATURE

Applications are invited from suitably qualified men and women for a one-year College Lectureship in English, with effect from 1 October 2000.

The Lectureship involves up to twelve hours of undergraduate teaching a week, mainly in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries, as well as Shakespeare and Renaissance Drama. The teaching is to be done in tutorials and classes, preparing students for the Oxford Finals examinations. Candidates should also be prepared to participate in undergraduate admissions. The salary will be on the incremental scale of £17,238-£19,869, together with certain benefits and allowances. A teaching room will be provided.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT

A Research Assistant is sought to work in Oxford with Professor John Kelly on the Collected Letters of W. B. Yeats. The qualifications required are a good honours degree in English, and preferably a graduate degree in modern English or Irish Studies, as well as experience of research in libraries and archives, excellent word-processing and database skills, the ability to use the Internet, and high standards of accuracy. The Assistant will be expected to spend some time working at the Newspaper Library of the British Library at Colindale, as well as other major library holdings and archives, as need may arise, to help with the preparation of biographical and historical notes and appendices, and to assist with checking bibliographical information, and with proof-reading.

The appointment will be for one year in the first instance and will begin as early in 2000 as is practicable. The salary will be funded by a grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board of the British Academy, and will be on the first point of the research staff grade 1A salary scale (£16,286 a year). St John's College will provide an office, computer facilities, and free lunches in the College Hall.
